The sign catches Axel's eye as he's walking by, and he pauses to read it again.

"Okay," he says after a moment. "I'm not really interested in signing up, but I am curious."

"What would you like to know?" answers Rand patiently.

"This 'Dark One' of yours," Axel says. "Who is he?"

Rand may notice a smell of smoke, and fire, and ash about Axel. Burning things.

"The Dark One is the antithesis of the Creator. Bound at the forging of the world, he is slowly breaking free."

"Which world?"

Axel's paradigm allows for... Well, just about anything, really.

"My land does not have a name specifically to speak of. If you have met Moiraine or Nynaeve Sedai, or Lan, they are from the same place."

He shrugs; he's met Lan, he thinks - the name rings a bell - but there was nothing significant in the meeting.

"So is this Dark One of your a creature of Darkness, or a creature of the Void?"

"I would venture to say both, perhaps. No one has ever seen the Dark One in person."

"Well, that's not necessarily any worse than being from any other element, and the Void," Axel says. "Although, if you're looking for an army, I'm guessing it's not just one guy you're after."

"No--he has forces of his own that we are fighting against. I can't give details, but we aim to carve a large...chunk out of the Dark One's troops in a few swift blows."

"...These forces would happen to be made of tangible darkness, and have a tendency to eat hearts, would they?"

He kind of has to ask.

Rand shakes his head. "No. Though some of them can step through the shadows. And if I were to venture a guess, I'd say that they do enjoy eating hearts. Along with the rest of whatever poor soul they happen to capture."

"Not the Heartless then," Axel says. Probably just an in-world problem.

Again, Rand shakes his head. "No, Shadowspawn are not the same as what you speak of."

Axel gives a toothy grin. "You never know. What you call Shadowspawn could very well be a type of Heartless," he says. "The ones I described are the the most common - the naturally occuring kind."
