A tell-tale sign that James Bond has spent the night at Milliways would be an alarming lack of suit. A tell-tale sign that James Bond is on holiday at home would be an alarming lack of suit. Therefore: there is no way of telling whether Bond has come in from his flat upstairs or in London. The only thing that is certain is the alarming lack of suit ( Read more... )

In some chronology other than when Mr Bond is being fluffy with is fiancee, and when Lee is not being fluffy with his lover, he's sitting on the couches nearby to where Mr Bond is, lacking a suit as well. In Lee's case however, it is slightly less alarming. He nods politely over his sandwich.

Bond, sadly, doesn't notice the nod. What does register is a slight movement that causes him to glance over the edge of his book. If Lee nods again, it might register to Bond as a greeting and not as a mere movement.

Lee can do better than that, he does nod again when Bond looks up, but this time he's swallowed what was in his mouth.

"Evening."

"Evening," he replies, leaving the book open. He'll return to it soon enough, given that this other fellow isn't so interesting a conversationalist.

It isn't that he's not so much of a conversationalist, but it's just not terribly polite to launch in with questions of origin and the nature of this crossroads of universes in the first breath. He nods towards the book.

"Can I ask which world's history you're studying?"

"My world's history," he replies, closing the book shut around his thumb. "Earth. Not as interesting as other worlds, I'm afraid."

"Depends on what you call 'interesting'. I've become quite interested in Earth's history recently, for all I always thought it's existence was some kid's fairy story."

Bond grins wryly. "Well I'm sure it sounds exotic to someone who's never lived there before, but I assure you it's not. Not compared to other worlds."

"In all honesty, nice, normal and un-exotic sounds really good. As long as there's air to breathe, water to drink and maybe some fruit, I doubt what's left on my end of humanity will argue about it."

"And where is your end of humanity?"

"On the run at the moment. We've got fewer than a hundred ships, and a little over forty thousand people left."

He smiles wryly.

"Less than a year ago we populated twelve worlds. Now we're just looking for the lost colony."

Bond matches the wry smile with a frown.

"Do you mind explaining what happened?"

"Ah..."

He's told the story enough times here that it's gotten pretty concise.

"A while ago we developed a type of robot with artificial intelligence. Eventually they got too smart and rebelled. The first war ended forty years ago and the Cylons found their own world, but apparently they didn't stop developing themselves, they evolved to look and seem human in almost every way. They infiltrated our defenses and annihilated us. Nuked every major city on every planet and every major spaceport. Only those of us not on the ground and with enough presence of thought to get the hell out of there survived."

Bond doesn't frown, doesn't nod, doesn't say anything because there's nothing he can think to say. This is the reason why he says his Earth isn't spectacular. For worse and for better, Bond's Earth isn't. And he isn't sure how to reply to a story like that.

Finally, "Sounds like this place is as good as any to take a holiday."

"You're damn right it is. Don't have to worry about whether or not each day is going to be my last here."

And he and Kara can have a somewhat normal relationship. For relative value of 'normal' when it's the two of them.

"I'm a fighter pilot, y'see. Front line."
