Hiro was down in the bar again. He was, sadly, rather preoccupied with a certain brand of woe here. But that didn't mean he wasn't trying to figure out a way to do something about it ( Read more... )

Not even to go pee? Well Hiro, that's why catheters were invented.

"What are you doing?" says the slightly-French-sounding English accent.

Fifty two cranes mock Rastaban. Hiro can pee in the pushes if he NEEDS TO. He's a guy, after all. It's not weird and awkward like it is for the ladies.

"Making cranes," he says and does not look up.

But in the dark, all leaves look alike.

Well as long as Hiro doesn't have to explain any interesting rashes to anyone...

He bends over to see the birds [they kinda look like birds] scattered about Hiro.

"I see. What for? And do you have enough?"

"Seventy-one," he says, even as another takes shape in his hands. Seventy-two. Seventy-three. "I have to have a thousand. For a wish for someone."

"A thousand?"

That's a lot, especially if you do it all by hand.

Rabastan? He has better methods.

"Will it work?"

Beat.

"How do you make them anyways?"

Ninety-two is in his palm now.

"No," he says. "Maybe. I can't say. If it makes her smile, it will be enough." Ninety-three, now. "I make them by folding paper. One crease, two crease. You know. Origami?"

If this lady of Hiro's was one of the tree-worshipping envrios she'd cry and not tears of joy either at the thought of one thousand paper cranes.

"Origami?"

He decides to sit down because he's starting to get a crick in his back from bending over.

At thirty-nine he's not getting any younger.

"Is that what you're doing with that paper?"

Rabastan's folded paper. The paper in books. He dog-eared a few pages in a few tomes back in school and got a screaching from Madam Pince as a reward.

One-hundred-thirteen...

"Yes. Origami. Paper-art."

Hiro is not an enviro. So there. One-hundred-fourteen.

If your comic collection is as extensive as Hiro's, no you're not.

He leans over. It's more involved than dog-earing books.

"Can I try?"

Learn how to make them, then use wand to make even more.

Isn't a wand CHEATING, Rastaban?

Hiro shows him the folds with one-hundred-and-thirty seven, and then once more with thirty-eight, too. A pink one, one with flowers... the paper offered to him has little geometric shapes.

Hiro is not a bad teacher at all.

Not in Rabastan's world. It's perfectly legitimate except when it isn't.

A good teacher. It only takes a few mistakes along the way before Rabastan gets the hang of it.

"And you're supposed to make a thousand of these?"

"Yes," he says, and then pouints to the one that Rastaban has folded now. "That's one-hundred-and-fifty-one," he explains, and then shows the one in his hands. "This is one-hundred-and-fifty-two."

And that's something, alright.

One hundred and fifty-two down; eight hundred and forty-eight to go.

"This isn't hard at all. Though given that you need a thousand and you'll catch a chill out here, it is possible to speed up the process?"

Rabastan: I do magic! But you know I can do magic, right?

Hiro gives Rastaban a Look.

"It's supposed to take time," he says, maybe a little defensive. "It is supposed to be done with a wish in your heart."

So no, you may not cheat!

You are so not fair. He'd only fold the paper faster, that's all.

*pout*

"It would still take time anyways," he says, feeling defensive himself. "I'd only be able to fold them one at a time, even with a wand."

It sounds like these cranes are part of a magical ritual so why no magic used in folding the colourful birds?
