Unsurprisingly, there is a Sarah Jane that sits down uninvited next to him. She places a hand on his thigh as she looks up at him, eyes wide and thoughtful. She studies him for seconds more, trying to think of what to say next. She wants to be reassuring, but she knows James better than that. The only way she's going to get him to admit to anything is to stay blunt and firm.
Sarah snorts and a flash of annoyance graces her face.
"Considering Vesper's gone now, I think that I'm the only one you have left," she begins, taking a deep breath to steady herself. "That you'll trust with this sort of thing. So, what's it going to be, James? Are you going to keep letting me in or is that gone now with Vesper?"
But right now he doesn't want to talk. He just wants to drink and brood and forget as best as he can. If Sarah Jane wants to hang around for it, all the better.
She will. Because last time she tried forcing him into talking, it turned into a fight. And while Sarah Jane would have no problem arguing with him, she doesn't think that it is what James needs right now.
What she does think he needs, however, is her. And a reminder that at least one person in his life isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
Sarah lifts his arm up to wrap around her shoulder as she tucks her legs to the side, half sitting on the booth seat and half on James' lap. She opens her eyes for a moment before closing them again, snuggling against him.

So: "She's gone now, isn't she?"

My, that drink is lovely.

If what he wants is silence then fine. He'll get it. Until he's finally ready to start talking, anyway.

Moments later, he presses his cheek against her hair, sighing deeply.
