[pre-milliways]

We all are told from when we're little that it's not good to believe in ghosts.
This holds more true in some worlds than in others.  In Milliways, for example, it makes no sense, because half the patrons are deceased, or in various stages of it.  Mostly, that's a pretty death.  A clean death.  An 'oh, I've died, how odd, I think I ( Read more... )

Enzo doesn't smell blood. He can't, unless it's digital. He may hear a bit of sighing, but it's muffled by his own noises. He has just climbed a quite large tree, and is now crawling out along a branch to see if he can make it onto another branch from a different tree.

So, what does our ghostling look like from above?

Dark hair, white hands clutching at things as he feels his way about, as much as sees. Rustling.

A red stain, standing out against the grey and black. Santi doesn't see Enzo.

Enzo, however, catches Santi out of the corner of his eye. The pallor doesn't bother him at all; he merely takes it as an indication that here is another non-human. The size indicates a child of around his own age. Pixelacious!

"Hey!" Clinging to his branch, he waves.

Santi jumps, terribly startled, and jerks to stare up at him, backing away. From this angle, away, looking up, it's much more clear what Santi is.

...but Enzo, well... he's green.

And Santi looks like something out of the more horrible sort of Game. Enzo grips his branch rather tighter. "Uh... hi?" he squeaks.

Santi backs up a little more, just as frightened.

He's green.

This actually reassures Enzo, at least a little. After all, backing away is not usually threatening behaviour. So he finds his voice again. "Sorry, did I startle you? I totally didn't mean to." He gives another little wave and a slightly forced grin.

Santi waves back, mimicking him more than extending a gesture of friendship.

Green.

Hollow-eyed and bloody.

"I'm Enzo. What's your name?" He still sounds a bit strained, mind you.

It's just, black where they should be white, and off-grey where they should be a dark, living brown. And yes, bloody.

He shakes his head, mutely.

Enzo leans down a bit more, curiously. "Can't you talk?"

"Hola."

He backs up far enough that his elbow disappears into the trunk of the tree.

Enzo can just hear that the boy has said something, but he can't make out what. He does notice the elbow intersecting the tree. "Dude, be careful! You're clipping!"

All Santi gets from this is that Enzo is now saying something urgently at him and he has no idea what, so he backs up further and goes neatly and completely into the tree.

And you can't make him come out, either.

Enzo gawks. That's not a clipping error.

He scoots forward on his branch, as originally planned, and stretches to touch a branch of the tree the boy disappeared into. Solid.

Tentatively, he leans to speak directly to the branch. "Hello?"

The tree and Santi both maintain their silence. Santi's, frightened, the tree's, placid. One assumes. Trees usually are.
