The notebook falls open on the table as she jolts down the suggestion. "And what will you be doing in the meantime, James?"

Without realizing, James might've said that as if he were preparing to say goodbye. Because, he realizes, he might not see this place again if he leaves.

He has no clue what will happen to him out there. He's off one case, but he could be assigned another, and heaven knows what would happen to him then. And if he lived, who's to say he would ever find a door to Milliways again? He had walked into here randomly. Perhaps it was a fluke. Perhaps it was a once-only deal, a funny kind of joke played on a man who needed connections but wouldn't make them in his world. Give him a taste of having somebody and take it away. Was that going to happen to him?
