If Ray were at home, he'd be calling his sister to ask if he could come visit his nephews a little early this week, but he's not. He's not going home until he's discharged his obligations to Agent Zed and to Garion. He's just SURE that if he tries he's going to wind up in some whackjob universe where, oh, Ivo Shandor is still alive or there's a ( Read more... )

There comes a time in a man's life when he must seek the help of professionals. No, not that kind of help. The help of those who simply know what they're talking about. For instance, if a man wants to find someone with a decent computer, he goes looking for someone with technical equipment and doodads. Such people leave a significant trail to follow, and Spider had been merrily on this one for an hour. Boy, he really liked to move around, didn't he? Well, in any case, that is why a smartly-dressed man came to find the back of Ray Stantz.

"Excuse me. I'm in need of a little...uh...technical assistance, you could say."

Ray looks up from poking at one of the circuit-board contacts with a pair of tweezers. "Well, it's entirely possible you've come to the right place," he says. "What sort of technical are we talking here, sir?"

At this, Spider paused for a couple of seconds to take in the...whatever-it-was...that Ray was working on. Oh yes. He was in the right place. Then, back to normal.

"Well, I was hoping to borrow a computer, actually. Wonderful thing, computers. Type in what you need and get what you want. It would probably have to have wireless access."

Ah, but wait'll you hear WHAT he wants it for.

"Oh, and while we're at it. Who are you? Since I've been here, I've been able to set my watch to you dashing around, working on something."

And he hasn't even been here that long...

"Uh, just so you know, there aren't any internet or telephone feeds into or out of here that I know of," Ray says. "Granted, some of the Furhold techs might've found a way to funnel some kind of magitech comms line out, but if they have then none of them's told me about it. If you really need a computer, you can probably get one to reasonably close specs from the Bar, although she won't do living technology and she doesn't do artificial intelligences. My name's Ray Stantz- I'm one of the longtime geek customers. And yourself?'

'Course, they might simplify matters by asking you.

"Hi, Mr. Stantz! YT said you wanted someone to throw stuff at you?"

Ray looks up and waves. "Oh, hey, hi, Enzo. Yeah, I need to test these shields outside, and rocks are a good place to start. You volunteering?"

"Sure!" Glee! Milliways offers so many fun diversions! "What kinda shields?"

"They're called Holtzmann defensive shields, after the scientist who came up with the theory behind them," says Ray. "They let stuff moving slowly pass through, but not stuff moving quickly, so someone can hand you a book but can't hit you with a punch or a bullet. I used to read about them in books, but nobody's actually built one yet in my world."
