What ho? 'Tis a hobbit!

In honor of the cousin who makes a brief cameo in The Fellowship of the Ring, a certain kitsune has come to investigate.

And maybe make off with a 'shroom or two.

In any case, there's a red fox leaping up on the stool next to Pippin. Doesn't he look positively starved?

Pippin starts to see a fox out in broad daylight, much less leaping atop a stool inside a bar.

"I don't think you're supposed to be inside," he tells it cautiously.

The fox's ears twitch indignantly. Who says he can't be inside?

Then he goes back to the unashamed begging. You've got a lot of shrooms there, hobbit. Can't you spare one for this poor, starving creature?

There are enough dogs in the Smials that he recognizes perfectly well what the fox is doing. He frowns, surreptitiously pulling the plate closer. "Do foxes eat mushrooms?"

His lower jaw drops in a fox-grin, and he nods vigorously.

Wait a minute! Do foxes back in the Shire nod like that?

It seems this fox does...as well as being a mushroom connoisseur.

Pippin's eyes widen.

He looks between his plate and the fox, and then he selects the smallest mushroom and hesitantly tosses it to the fox.

And the mushroom is deftly caught between shiny, white teeth.

There's a distinct glint of laughter in the fox's eyes as he munches happily.
