First Entrance

[Previously: The end of an average day, in a police station in the south of England -- May 1940.]

The door opens, and a young woman in a smart khaki-and-olive-drab uniform steps into the bar. She proceeds to take three more steps into the bar proper before coming to an abrupt halt, and looking round in increasing bafflement.

Not half a moment ago, she'd been in the office of Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle. She had been in his office for all of two minutes at most. And unless the Hastings police station has suddenly taken a very different view of the licencing laws, there is really no reason why there should be a pub on the other side of DCS Foyle's office door.

Samantha Stewart bites down on her lower lip. Almost reflexively, one hand goes down to clutch at the bag that holds her gas mask.
