"What if we don't know what Chinese is?" Shalla asks, frowning slightly.

"It's a language, and on Earth they just had their New Year's celebration," Mal explains. "We speak Chinese in my 'verse too, just that we had our New Year's a couple months back. It's what 500 years o' separation does, I suppose."

She nods. "So it's like a version of Fete Week. How big's the celebration?"

"I've never been to an Earth-that-Was version, but in my 'verse it's huge. Festivals that last for a week or more and so forth. Me and mine tend toward the celebrating only on the day of, but folk'll use any excuse for a shindig."

"Like that in my galaxy, too. Some things're the same all over. Though we haven't really had a chance to celebrate all week in the past years, with the wars."

She pauses, then grins. "But it doesn't matter at the end of the universe. I'll have a Leap Year, I think."

"Good plan."

Mal gets a cocktail glass out for Shalla, and a shaker.

"But things are sailin' along, at home?"

"More or less. I'm set to go on another mission when I go back, check for Imperial cells on some planet or another. But Zsinj is beat, and things are mostly quiet."

Mal finishes preparing Shalla's cocktail and sets it in front of her.

"Did you come to the Lake Party at all?"

Shalla frowns, taking a quick sip of her drink before answering. "I missed a party?"

"Shi a -- someone magicked the weather so's to be all warm and everything, the whole weekend everyone was outside."

"New job. This is my...fourth week? Damn, I can't even keep track and I'm still new at the thing," Mal laughs at himself.

"Why, am I terribly new-lookin'? I ain't been new-lookin' in years."
