( An hour or so ago. When Beth and Spike come in from the House of Arch, she's got a hell of a lot more on her than she ever has for her trips out with him, but none of those trips ever involved a baby. And all of those trips were to places where she could easily buy anything she forgot and needed mid-trip ( Read more... )

There's nothing easy about this. Despite all the planning and all the assurances and all the reassurances, it's still not easy. Mostly it's because the whole setup makes him feel helpless, and feeling helpless isn't his strong suit at all ( ... )

The backpack weighs a goddamn ton; it always amazes her that just a few days without the thing on her back makes it so much harder to pick up and put on again. And frankly, she already feels just a little bit better.

"Hey, Junior. Got a smile for Spike?"

She doesn't smile on cue, but it's worth a try.

"Bye, princess." Reaching forward, he rubs Junior's cheek with his fingertip, then leans over and kisses the soft skin on her forehead. "I'll see you back here soon." The baby's eyes are wide with stimulus, with excitement, with the amount she can see from her new vantage point. It's awfully damn sweet ( ... )
