Two stools down, somebody's plotting something.

But meanwhile, he's playing a few notes on a whistle every now and again, and looking extraordinarily pleased with himself.

"Do you take requests?" she asks, smiling sideways at him as she leans forwards and rests her forearms on the bar.

Her hair covers her face, for a minute, but there's never the sense that she's not seeing him clearly.

Far from it.

"If I could, ma'am, I would," Cooper says, with regret. "Music isn't one of my gifts."

He holds up his whistle.

(It's kind of clumsily carved.)

"Whittling, though -- that's a little different."

"It's not mine, either. Though there's one song I've got down pretty well," she admits.

"Mind if I see it?"

"Be my guest," cheerfully, and Cooper holds it out.

"I couldn't make this," she says thoughtfully, and fingers it carefully, appreciatively.

She remembers the tree the wood came from. It was 74 years old before rot hit a section of it and they cut it down, and it thought slow and steady thoughts that humans wouldn't understand at all.

The best translation is, I am, but the problem is that very few humans can think I am and be satisfied.

And if you can't do that, you can't understand the tree.

It's a little clumsily carved, but she admires it anyway and genuinely before handing it back.

"You do good work."

"Thank you," Cooper says, and he's honestly pleased. "It's really not all that hard, once you practice a little -- I could show you, if you'd like."

"My brother's much better at making things," and she's smiling, just stating a fact, "than I am. But if you want to, I'd love to at least watch. And you're welcome, Dale."

His smile doesn't change, and neither does his tone. "You know my name, but I missed yours, I think."

"Yeah. That's how it tends to work." It's not so much apologetic as just a shrug and a different sort of smile. "Death."

Still no change. "Sister of Dream?"

"One, yes."

It's just calm, as she sips her White Russian.

"You know him."

It's not a question. And the word that goes at the end and isn't said is, well.

"Three aspects of him. Yes." And now there's something clipped in that answer to the not-question. "Though I have my doubts about whether or not anybody can really know him."

Here, Cooper is using know to mean understand.

"You can. You might not want to."

Everything has a price, even that.

(Especially that.)

"There's no might about it." Beat. "I don't mean to offend." That's said with apology.

She grins at that and puts her hands behind her head, idly.

"You're smart." It's approving and to both statements. "You can't help it, entirely."
