Cimorene is settled at a small table near the bar with her feet propped up on a chair. It's been a busy week in the Mountains of Morning, what with the ambassador from the Frost Giants visiting with his entire entourage, and she's more than happy to take a much-needed break ( Read more... )

She looks suspiciously like she needs to be kissed.

The narration is just saying.

Does she now? Well, this narration would just like to remind him that he'd better not spill her hot chocolate.

Ahem.

Right. No hot chocolate spilling, then.

"Good evening, Cimorene."

And yes, she gets kissed.

And a very pleasant surprise it is.

"Evening, Mendanbar," she says, smiling. She moves her feet off the other chair so he can sit.

He drops into the other chair easily.

"How are you and the dragons?"

"Worn out," she says tiredly. "We had a large delegation from the Frost Giants all this week, and they only just left."

And he knows what Frost Giants can be like.

Mendanbar frowns sympathetically. He knows what Frost Giants can be like.

Wait. Did someone just say that?

"Bad time of year for it," he says. "You must have been quite chilly."

"Just a bit," she says wryly. "The dragons never really find it a problem. I imagine it has something to do with having one's own internal source of fire."

She shrugs, "At least the kitchen was always warm. I could always retreat during the more official functions."

Chief cooks and librarians, important as they are, aren't, technically, invited to those sorts of functions.

"Better take advantage of that while you can," he advises, and he's only half-kidding. Queens have a lot less leeway on missing the more official functions.

"Good point," she agrees, "Perhaps in the future I shall just retreat into the garden or some such and let you make all the important diplomatic decisions."

She smirks at him.

He frowns a little, mock hurt.

"You wouldn't really do that to me, would you?"

"No, I suppose I wouldn't," she says, grinning. "Although you've done a pretty good job on your own so far. After all, look how well you've done with the dragons."

"I have to be nice to the dragons," he says. "Or Kazul may change her mind."

Very silly grin on his face.

"As if I'd let her," she says.

She may be one of the only people who could put her foot down and make the King of the Dragons listen.

"Well, good. That's settled then.

"Oh, you'll be getting a very long letter from Willin, if you haven't already. About placesettings, maybe. Or music. Possibly flowers."

She gives him a look of minor dismay.

"I don't suppose," she says wearily, "that you can tell him I honestly don't have any preferences?"

She shakes her head, thinking better of it, "No. I'd best see to the seating arrangements at least. Otherwise heaven knows who Mother will end up sitting next to, and that could end very poorly."
