Whistler's dismantled a Speak 'n Spell, by the look of the bright orange casing on the table in front of him. It's a long, slow, careful, painstaking process. Fortunately, it's largely done. He's testing contact points and making notes now, but good luck reading over his shoulder; the notes are done with a stylus and punch-pad, in Braille.
Hence the slow and painstaking.
