Valerie has appropriated a spot by the fire -- an armchair, the perfect place for tucking up her feet and gazing into the flames, sipping tea, absently playing with her hair with her free hand.

It's going to be a while before the shine of this place's luxuries wears off.

A bald man plops down into the couch next to her, nods, and looks into the fire.

She starts, reverie broken, and gives him a smile and a nod in return.

"Evening."

Cheerful.

"Evening." She smiles over her teacup. "The fireside's fairly popular tonight, it looks like."

"It's certainly warm." A bright grin. "My name's John. John Locke."

He extends a hand.

She takes it, firmly. "I'm Valerie. How do you do?"

"Very well. And yourself? Are you new here? Just asking--I haven't seen you around. Haven't seen most people around here; I don't come to this place often."

He has no need.

"Fairly new. I've been here a few weeks. I'm still getting used to it."

"I don't think you can ever get used to a place like this."

She looks around, eyebrows up. "You may be right."

Then she smiles, sips her tea, and adds, "But I intend to enjoy it, at least."

"Seems to be a lot to enjoy."

Won't say whether he enjoys it, though.

"There's the fire," she offers, with a hint of teasing, "and tea."

"An endless supply of tea. Frankly I'm a bigger fan of the beer."

"The Scotch is good, too."

"Haven't tried that yet. Haven't tried the tea yet, either. I tend to look for things that are rare where I live now. Alcohol's not only rare, but it also comes in handy sometimes. It's a more...direct approach to taking the edge off of things."

Locke's old job may explain why he's nonchalant about suggesting drugs as a way to take the edge off of things.

Her expression becomes -- not quite wary, but a little guarded. It's not much of a change; Valerie's an actress, and she knows how to control her face, as a rule.

"Oh. Were are you from?"
