Tonight when he comes through the door into Milliways, Gabriel Tam is carrying four books with a few thin volumes of mipian serials stacked on top.

He moves purposefully to the bar and sets them down as he says,

A tall man with crooked shoulders pauses in the act of ordering wine from the Bar.

Sharply, "Who did you say you were looking for?"

Still in the act of picking up the pen, Gabriel turns to him and arches a polite eyebrow.

"Mary Lennox. Duìbùqĭ, but I don't believe I've had the pleasure, Mr...?"

"Archibald Craven. Misselthwaite Manor, Yorkshire." Mr. Craven's expression is anxious rather than stern. "Mary Lennox is my ward, and I would like to know how you know her."

"Your ward. You would be her uncle, then?"

Something in Gabriel's face hardens suddenly, even as he offers a hand and a too-sharp, cordial smile.
