With a stranger, he could just nod amiably and move on to Rachat's stall, and not have to make small talk and explain that, well, no, he hadn't been around in a while, had he, but he'd been doing fine, so nice to hear

He's found that casualness helps it be a bit less uncomfortable for the other person, sometimes. He doesn't know how long Kim's been here, and it's always rather awkward to be the first person to break that news.
