Edmund went out to the stable earlier. There was a stranger mucking out stalls, which Edmund was secretly rather grateful for. With a stranger, he could just nod amiably and move on to Rachat's stall, and not have to make small talk and explain that, well, no, he hadn't been around in a while, had he, but he'd been doing fine, so nice to hear ( Read more... )

She's been sitting at the bar for a bit, looking around the room, when she notices the stranger with a book.

Kim leans forward a little, trying to see the title.

It's a moment before Edmund notices her, and a moment more before he sorts out what she's looking at. But when he does a corner of his mouth lifts, and he tilts the book to a better angle for her.

Kim winces, laughing a little.

"Sorry-- I didn't mean to be rude."

"No, no," he assures her.

"I've done the same, believe me."

"Still," she says, then blithely looks at the book which he's so helpfully tilted her way.

"Shakespeare, huh? Is-- are you from earth, then?"

"More or less," Edmund says cheerfully.

She doesn't look Narnian, but he still feels a bit silly from having accidentally misled Cora the other day.

"England, to be specific. You too, I take it?"

"Earth, at least," she tells him. "My mom's from England -- but I'm from Canada. Toronto."

She smiles brightly at him.

"I'm Kim Ford, by the way."

"Nice to meet you."

A second passes, and then she continues,

"If you'd rather get back to your reading, I can leave you alone, really."

"No, it's all right," he assures her with a quick smile, tucking a scrap of paper into the open book for a bookmark.

"I can read at home just as easily."

"I didn't mean to be rude, though," she says, with an engaging smile, "but I'll take you up on it anyway."

Home, he'd said, and that means it's more than likely he doesn't have the need to frequent a library for patrons trapped in the bar.

"So what brings you here, Edmund Pevensie?"

"Tea," he says cheerfully, indicating the half-finished plate of scones and tea set in front of him.

"Or did you mean in general?"

Kim laughs, and displays her own cup of coffee.

"I meant in general."

"I died," he says, casual and a little rueful.

He's found that casualness helps it be a bit less uncomfortable for the other person, sometimes. He doesn't know how long Kim's been here, and it's always rather awkward to be the first person to break that news.

"So here's home, for the moment -- well, over in the House of Arch is where I live, really."
