There's another fellow with a stack of paperbacks.

John Preston's developed a very serious curiousity about books, ever since they stopped burning them in his world. He doesn't read them very often, but Bar's trying to cheer him up.

"....Is it good?"

He clearly doesn't understand the concept of books. When one is reading, one is not supposed to be disturbed.

Sam doesn't mind. He's read it before, anyway.

"Not bad," he says cheerfully, showing him the cover: Alice Through The Looking-Glass. "Yours?"

"...Difficult." Preston waves the title, "...Difficult to understand. I don't understand why people call this entertainment." He waves the title The once and future king at Sam.

Interestingly enough, he's not putting it down.

"Sometimes working it out is half the point." Sam eyes it. "Arthurian, right?"

Preston blinks, "...What?"

He's from a world deficiant in decent reading material.

"Something based on the myths about King Arthur, Merlin, all that jazz," Sam explains. "Well, supposedly myths."

A headtilt, "...You're from-A world where this is real?"

It's not that unheard of, "-It's got to be mythological. No Leader could do the things that the author describes. Not to mention the wizard-"

John Preston is skeptical man.

"Not precisely. Mortals never get their facts straight. But- Merlin, the genuine article? He's my half brother."

"....What?"

The book is set down, "...This guy?"

The book comes cleverly illustrated with a crooked old man with a long white beard.

"Not that he actually looked much like that, but that's the general interpretation of him, yeah."

A frown.

"...The things they describe him doing are impossibl-" Preston grins, "...Saying that in a bar at the end of the universe. Did he really do all of the things that are described?"

Phrasing a question better is oftentimes very important.

Sam laughs. "Depends which set of stories you've heard. He did a lot of it, though- and he didn't get shut up in an oak tree. For a long time he was considered one of the best of that side of the family, for talent."

'For a long time', i.e. until Sam came along.

Preston tilts his head, "...You...know his family?"

Amused, "Like I said, he's my half-brother. Same mother, different fathers."

Preston 's mun did not catch that.

"...So You're a wizard too?"

Preston blinks, "-An actual "talk to the trees and read the thoughts of others wizard?"

Sam grins. "Nah, not exactly. Wizards are mortals. But I can do the thoughts stuff, and to a certain extent planty stuff."

He flicks a fireball into the air. "You new here, by any chance? Or at any rate newish?"
