River's sitting on the back of a booth -- on the back, literally, with her forearms resting on her knees and her back against the wall. There's a rafter near her head, a few feet up. She's wearing black boots, a yellow sundress, and the long brown coat Roland gave her. Several of its pockets, as usual, bulge slightly with odds and ends ( Read more... )

And now? The room is watching her.

Well.

Kinda.

Not the whole room, really.

Just a bit of it.

That corner.

No, the other corner.

...

The other, other corner.

Right, the one with the doberman in it.

Quite honestly, it's the doberman watching her, not the corner. She's practicing her long-range begging techniques.

It could be the corner. As well.

River peers back.

Possibly. You never know with corners.

Magic, on the other hand, notes she's hooked her target. Now, to reeeeeeel her in...

She goes from sitting to laying down, putting her head on her paws like it just weighs too much, her big soulful brown eyes staaaaaaring at River.

River ducks her own head a little, and a tiny soft smile grows as she watches Magic.

Curling up of lips! Magic has learned that humans are very weird and only curl their lips and show their teeth then they're happy. So strange. But! It's working!.

She crawls on her belly, just a few steps forward, staring pitifully at River all the while.

"Greedy," River says with that same tiny smile. It's almost a croon, for all that Magic is much too far away to hear.

"Eat and sleep."

River forgot the crazy running around the TARDIS, but that is the gist of Magic's life, yes.

Magic forgets her cunning ploy for a moment and bounds forwards a few feet before dropping like a rock and watching River with big eyes.

Her tail beats out a regular tattoo on the hard wood floor.

River giggles silently.

"Got no protein," she apologizes.

"You'll have to chase it."

River is a person. There's nothing River can't do.

Except maybe talk dog. Most humans make utter hash of it. No sense of proper grammar.

Magic fails at subtle tonight and skitters across the floor to cover the rest of the distance between her and River.

'Feed me, love me, TAKE ME HOME' say the big brown eyes. Except, you know, not out loud.

Mal would be overjoyed at that! So would Simon.

And, y'know, Ace.

River leans forward slowly, dropping her legs to straddle the booth top so she can move to lie on her stomach, dangling one arm down.

She's still on top of the booth, of course, so her hand is a couple of feet above Magic's head.

It's such a dilemma - jump on the booth bench for scritches, or stay on the floor and be a Good Dog for staying off the furniture? The decisions this poor pup faces, honestly!

Scritches win every time. Hopefully people don't mind paw prints on the fake leather.

The benches have undoubtedly seen worse abuse.

River giggles, approving, and runs light fingers over Magic's head to her floppy ear.

ACK! TICKLES!

Magic tries to scratch at her own ear with her back paw. Silly flies, following her about...

River giggles, and then jumps a little, pulling back her hand as puppy claws scratch it.

Magic gives her ear (and hopefully that dratted fly) a good thrashing, then looks up hopefully at River again.

'I'm starving and not loved and NEED A HOME TAKE ME HOME' she'd say if she could talk, mostly because mum hasn't fed her for a WHOLE TWO HOURS and she is clearly wasting away. All skin and bones, this one. Really. Ignore the muscles, they are an optical illusion.

But of course. Clearly this is the very picture of an abused dog.

Thin red scratches are rising on the back of River's hand, but nothing too bad. Slowly, she lowers her hand again, smiling as she watches Magic.
