The door opens; on the other side, a bland, carpeted hallway can be seen. The dark-haired woman who steps through is carrying an overnight bag, large enough for perhaps a week's stay somewhere. It's not until she sets the bag down and turns around to retrieve her key that the nature of the place starts to intrude on her perceptions, and she doesn't ( Read more... )

There's a man that might be oddly familiar, sitting by the bar with a small boy on his knees, trying to get him to eat.

It's just possible, yes. At least, he's got a more familiar face than anyone else in this...

Mind you, actors can be found in all kinds of odd places. Thus the assumption as she heads over in that direction, namely: she's stumbled onto a movie set.

"Excuse me, sir..."

He looks up at her with a friendly smile.

"Evening, ma'am."

"Er- yes..." She sets her bag down beside her. "Look, I didn't mean to disrupt your filming, Mr. Bean, but I was... rather under the impression this was gonna be my hotel room. Did I make a mistake?"

Her accent is heavily London, but she still has traces in plenty of the Yorkshire inflections given her by her parents.

*Andrew's sitting at the bar tonight, eating a chicken sandwich and reading something by Ursula LeGuin.*

*He doesn't notice the new face just yet.*

Not a terrible surprise, really. It's not like she looks like anyone he knows.

"Excuse me," she says to no one in particular as she settles down at a nearby stool. "But has anyone seen a barman about? I could really do with a drink about now."

*No, her face isn't familiar at all. Her voice, on the other hand ...*

*Andrew turns to her, lowering his book.*

Uh --

*Is it actually her, though? All he's got is ten minutes of conversation over a cellphone, which isn't nearly enough to be sure....*

The usual guy's gone tonight, so orders are kind of coming slow.

"Ah," says Annie, wearily. "Lovely. Is there a substitute, or, I dunno, a waiter or summat? This is not where I meant to be."

There's a small child doing his best to avoid the large crowds.

Please Pardon him if he bumps into you.
He's pretty good at manuvering deftly through crowds though. He can't be seen except by parents people who are poorly trained.

There is a bump, albeit a small one. Annie looks down, expecting-

Well, she doesn't know what she's been expecting, but it wasn't a kid. Not in a place like this. "Here," she says, brow furrowing a little in concern, "are you all right? You look a bit lost."

So does she, but that's not important right now.

Robbie looks up sharply, hand going to the back of his neck, "-I-"

The don't talk to strangers rule sort of doesn't apply to Milliways. At least, in Robbie's mind.

"...No ma'am." He folds his arms behind his back and looks up small face set in stone, "-I was going to go and get some tea from the bar and uh-"

I didn't want to hide in my room anymore..

He's just a little big nervous, "...you-you must be new here."

No child that age, Annie instinctively thinks, ought to look like that.

"I think the Bar's broken," she says kindly, "or at least, someone said to order from the rats. And yes, I am." She gestures at her bag, which isn't far away. "Thought I was going to a hotel room, you see. My name's Annie."
