Once again, the city pub has become Milliways for Massachusetts representative John Adams. Unlike last time, though, he's too preoccupied to really care. He just spots an empty seat by the fireplace and pulls a coffee table closer. Unrolling a parchment, he also sets up quill and inkwell and proceeds to start writing.

john adams, karr, martha adams

((I have been informed that my AU 1986 Martha Adams should meet John Adams. On the other hand, I would be slow if I did so. Up for threading anyway?))

Assuming that John Adams looks rather like the portraits of John Adams that one sees in history books, Mrs. Martha Adams (A.D.1986) looks rather like someone who is fighting the urge to fangirl horribly.

As she's in her late thirties, she manages to conceal it tolerably well.

Her inner teenager is squealing in joy, however.

John looks up from his parchment with a frustrated sigh. He heads over to the bar to get a drink from the bar.

Then he sees her. Flash of red hair, and that smile.

"Abagail?"

"I'm afraid not."

Her voice is New York state. She smiles again, though,

"Martha. Mrs. Martha Adams, 1986, United States of America."

His face goes pale. "Did... did you say Adams?"

"Yes."

Its almost apologetic as she explains,

"My husband was Josh Adams...and before I married my maiden name was also Adams."

Followed by an even more apologetic,

"My father is descended from John Adams."

And if that's him, well. She will buy him a drink and try not to squeal too much.

"What a... staggering coincidence. John Adams happens to be my name as well."

He looks at her again -- so familiar. So easy to see Abagail in that face.

"It's... not a coincidence, is it?"

"You...might be from a different universe's version of Earth?"

She offers after a moment, fairly weakly in her own mind. Her eyes, however, are alive with light.

This is better than meeting Elvis would have been.

John has been able to cope with the idea that there are people from the future here. Multiple universes... are a little beyond him at this point.

"Different... universe?" he asks, blinking in confusion.

"I met a werewolf from St. Louis the other day."

She explains after a moment of "Oh, dear".

Daniel, you were the one with words. Why am I the one attempting to explain this?

"My Earth does not have them."

There is a certain level of weirdness that a mind is capable of handling before it simply blows a fuse and blinds itself. This level has steadily increased over time, but in 1776, was still relatively low. John Adams has just hit his.

"How strange," he murmurs. "You look so like my wife. And, if I allow myself the conceit, I can also see something of myself in your expression."

He seems to remember himself and his manners suddenly.

"I have a seat by the fire. Won't you join me, madam?"

Of course it is also possible that he is talking to his many-times great granddaughter, the idea of which has her cheerfully reeling.

"I would be very honored to join you, Mr. Adams."

He gives her a nod of thanks and leads her back to the armchairs.

"Oh, let me get that for you," he says with a note of embarassment, taking her drink and setting it on the table after clearing away his inkwell and parchment so that she can sit comfortably.

"Thank you."

She says with a smile as she settles down. 'Gracious' is a good word to define her, in very nearly everything that she does,

"May I ask what you are working on?"

Because it could be the single most important document in her life, up to and including the Bible.

He looks forlornly at the rolled parchment and sighs.

"It was a resolution to Congress regarding American independence. Now, I fear it is little more than kindling."
