The front door to Milliways bangs open. Beyond it, a cave mouth can be seen. It looks like a beautiful day outside the cave, with clear bright skies and calm seas. The Black Pearl is barely visible, floating at anchor on the gently rolling waves ( Read more... )

River, on the contrary, is quiet today. She's lying under a booth, in the shadows, relaxed and still.

Her eyes are closed; her hair spreads around her as if floating in a pool of seawater.

That relaxation might be somewhat disturbed by the sound of boots stomping by toward the bar, then back again-- or the sound of soft, fervent cursing as he flings himself into a neighboring booth and begins to drink.

Maybe.

On the other hand, River lives on a ship in close quarters with Jayne Cobb.

She turns her head towards his booth, eyes still closed; after a minute, she opens them. She can't see Jack from here, but she watches the wall between them with interest.

When there's a momentary lull in the cursing, and the sound of a glass or tankard being slammed down on the table, she suggests, "Dàxiàng bàozhàshì de lādùzi. You can translate."

One more curse, this one bitten off suddenly, and then beaded braids dangle clearly as Jack leans to the side, looking under the table.

A pause.

"Lass, there's perfectly good chairs about."

River waits expectantly for him to say something relevant.

"Don't suppose you'd see fit to come out up to one of them?"

He's grinning now.

"I'm comfortable," River points out.

"Fair point," Jack concedes, and immediately slides to the floor beside the booth.

The rum is snagged and brought down with him.

"And now so am I, savvy?" He winks at her.

River clearly approves, with a quick and silent laugh.

Jack grins, and then takes a drink from the bottle.

Then there's a thoughtful pause, in which he looks from the bottle to River and back again-- and holds it out to her.

"Rum?"

Jack laughs. "It's not that bad..."

With sudden suspicion,

"Elizabeth hasn't been around here again, spreading stories, now has she?"

River brightens.

No, but if there are stories she wants to hear them now.

"The lass has a completely irrational dislike for rum," Jack tells her. "Says it's a vile, filthy drink."

He looks sulky, although black eyes are gleaming with mischief.

"Distilled through fermentation past the point of molasses," says River to the underside of the table. "C12H22O11 -- disaccharides in alcoholic liquid."

Beat, and a sudden grin.

"Rumbullion."

He cocks his head, grinning.

"Drink and treasure at once, lass."

He hums a song under his breath, muttering, "..really bad eggs," then lifts the bottle to her.

"Drink up me hearties--"
