Felix, tonight, finds himself by the Observation Window. He watches for a moment, then clasps his hands over his heart and sings.

"Good night, my Sheba ( Read more... )

A floating skull looks at Felix for a moment. He clicks his teeth together - it sounds a bit like very slow, very sarcastic applause.

Click. Click. Click.

After a moment Felix looks. He scrambles for a moment before realizing that this skull is not surrounded by an eldritch glow and is thus not likely to be a mindless monster from his own world. He then proceeds to the next reasonable reaction:

"???"

Morte's teeth suddenly shift, becoming shark-like and pointed, before throwing himself forward, horror-movie style, with a howled, "BLLEEEAAARGH!"

He'll stop before he actually hits Felix.

Ah, here's where the warrior-training comes in. Though it was not present before - or at least not visible or tangible - the Flame Shield is now on Felix's arm and coming up to block Morte's apparent trajectory.

The sword would be out too, but Felix's current position makes it awkward to reach his scabbard.

Morte stops before he hits it. His teeth turn back to their normal human set.

"No screaming? Aw, yer no fun," he complains.

Blink. A shorter blink than it would have been a few months ago, but...

The shield is gone as quickly as it arrived.

"I generally find screaming to be a waste of breath. Also it doesn't tend to help with concentration. Sorry."

"You should be," mutters the skull. He then looks Felix over.

"So, I noticed you were serenading a certain someone. With music and everything. You have heard that that's not the greatest idea right now, eh, cutter?"

Felix, it has been said, is not a blusher. He is, however, coming about as close as he ever does.

"Ah, yes, I have. It was... not precisely planned."

The skull rolls his eyes. "Yeah, I get that.

"Seems like today is your lucky day, er...Whatchername?"

There is an inquisitive look, but Felix doesn't remark. "Felix of Vale, Venus Adept."

"Right. Today is your lucky day, Felix of Vale. I just happen to have on me a handy charm to ward off that inconvenient burning sensation!

"And it's practically free!"

"A charm, you say." Felix is wary. Something about Morte's voice reminds him of the stories about Lunpa - not essentially malevolent, but definitely looking to get more than the other person thinks they're giving.

"For only a few coppers, or anything else of value you'd care to trade. A gen-u-iiiiine charcoal charm."

"And how exactly does this charm work?"

There are a couple of other questions he's asking inside his own head - most notably 'how would charcoal stop anything from burning' and 'where are you carrying it' - but he figures either they'll be explained or they'll turn out to be unimportant.

"You break it, it protects you from fire damage. Mind you, these charms don't go on forever. But, hey, any port in a storm, right?"

"Perhaps so. But I think I'll pass on this, thanks anyway."
