Will, sitting down the bar with his teacup raised halfway to his mouth, has a smile on his face which lightens his dark eyes, and Kirjava, standing nearby, pads quickly down the Bar to greet Kaisa, tail waving gracefully.
"It's good to see you," he says, smiling warmly, and reaches up to lay his hand over hers.
"I am very well, but we've been busy, Kirjava and I, and we haven't been able to come here or see you or Lyra for quite a while now. You're looking well, as always."
And she does. He is still amazed at the youthful beauty of the witches, and with a pang realizes that soon he and Lyra will look older than she.
Serafina smiles slightly. "No. Witches can be volatile, and that can lead to fighting among clans, but grievances must run very deep in order to last long."
"I think I understand. Lyra told me all about her visit with you, a few months ago, you know. And I suppose 'long' for you would be well past my lifetime."
Serafina's smile widens at the mention of the visit--it was good to spend time with Lyra at leisure, without conflict or hurry. The same way it's good to be able to talk casually like this with Will.
"I think Lyra knows more of the ways of witches by now than most mortals as young as she ever have. But then, she is more like a witch than most mortals." Her eyes flick toward Kirjava. "You both are."

"Will."
She moves down the bar herself, reaching to lay one hand on his shoulder.
"You are well, I hope?"

And while this is nothing new, it doesn't mean there's not a pang for her, as well.
She takes a seat next to him, still smiling.
"And what have you been busy with? Studies?"
Reply
"Yes. I advanced a year early, and I've quite a lot of work before the school year is over, but it is interesting work."
He smiles slightly.
"Mary and I often talk about it over meals or in the evenings--you know I study Theology, and she was a nun, once."
Reply
"I find it interesting, that you would choose to study theology--but I am glad that the work interests you. And I hope Mary is well, also."
Reply
"She's very well. And she asks after you often. I haven't been able to tell her much, lately, of course."
He takes a sip of tea, and looks back at her.
"How have you been? And how is your tribe?"
Reply
She sips her wine.
"And my hope is that the conflict will not escalate, or last long."

"It is still strange to me as well. I don't think such a thing would have been possible in my world, or yours."
She glances towards the daemons again. "But I passed on what knowledge I could to Kirjava, and Pantalaimon."
Reply
"Thank you," he says, and pushes back his hope for more information.
"I guess Lyra and I complicate things, don't we?"
Reply
"You do, in a way. But even so, I would not give up knowing either of you. Complications are not always a thing to be avoided."
If they were, witches would never fall in love.
