Simon Tam's in the bar, sitting at a table with a plate of sliced apple and sharp cheese. He's nibbling absently, focused mostly on his datareader.

It appears to be playing a recap of a recent newscast.

Don't worry, he's seen it before and won't mind being interrupted.

"Is it just me," someone nearby him demands of the air, because the air is possible the sanest being here, "or is there something very wrong with rats being the wait staff? No offense," she adds to the rat that brought about this rant.

The rat shrugs. Whatcha gonna do, eh?

"I've often thought so," Simon admits, looking up.

"They're rats. I like rats. In cages. Away from my food."

...Maybe this one is sane. Oh sweet God let this one be sane.

"Well, that's why I generally order straight from the Bar." A small shrug, and a smile. "I haven't seen you in a while. How have you been?"

Ray wanders by with a hamburger and a glass of his usual green stuff. After a moment, he pauses and turns around. It takes him a moment to jostle the name loose from his memory. "Hey there... Dr. Tam, right?"

Simon looks up, and smiles. "Yes. Ah ... Dr. Stantz, isn't it?"

"Yep. It's been a while." Ray smiles. "I spoke to Captain Reynolds the other day- he says the equations I gave you guys wound up taking over the kitchen. They weren't too esoteric, I hope? I was sort of two steps away from having to inject myself with sleep compensators at the point that I laid them out."

He chuckles. "They were ... possibly the strangest thing I've ever seen that still made any actual sense."

"That," says somebody from behind him, sounding awed, "is some device."

Simon blinks up. "This?" He pauses the display, and lifts the datareader slightly.

"That. The image quality is -- "

"Wow."

He starts the newscast playing again, but silently. "It's fairly standard, in my time."

You know you've been coming here too long, says a tiny snarky voice in the back of his mind, when saying something like that aloud doesn't seem odd in the slightest.
