And here comes Riley, walking slowly through the woods toward the lake. He stops at the edge, and sighs, his breath a white mist in the cold air.

And stops still up the tree, not moving; barely breathing.

Riley sighs, looking out over the lake and talking to himself a bit,

"This place is too weird. I thought Sunnydale was weird being the Hellmouth. I wonder how much worse it is here."

He gathers up some snow and packs it into a ball. He tosses it up in the air and it falls back down...catching it. He does this repeatedly.

Except for when it gets too close to Buffy, and, reactively, she reaches out and catches it.

And immediately curses herself.

Riley turns quickly, ready to fight and then eyes go wide when he sees who it is.

"Buffy?"

He fidgets a bit, fixing himself up and checking his hair a bit.

"Um, people mentioned I might see you. So..how are you?"

"Hey, Riley."

She looks down at him, smiling a little smile.

"Dead. You?"

Riley shrugs,

"Not so dead? So I take you're not from my time then...the time when you, weren't....dead."

He looks back and forth a bit. Sheepish.

"I spend most of my time not-dead. It's a thing about being alive," she says, and dropes, gracefully, to the ground. "What's your when?"

He instinctively brings a hand up to his neck. He's slowly starting to relax.

She raises an eyebrow.

"Ah. Gotcha. I'm from 2001. Just after I died, in case I didn't mention that. I think I tell everyone once or twice, or three or four times, just to make sure they know it."

Riley nods,

"That doesn't change how good it is to see you. That is, unless I did something to piss you off, but if I did, I figured I'd be beaten to a pulp right about now."

He laughs a bit.

"So is this what it's like then?"

She shakes her head.

"I've had plenty of time to deal with this." Kind of.

"Is this what what's like?"

"Being dead?"

Riley shrugs,

"I guess I wouldn't complain but...I always imagined that things would be different. Not a bar for one."

"Oh. Well, being dead is kinda boring, really. Being stuck in a bar? Isn't nearly as fun as you'd think."

She brushes her hair back from her face, breath steaming in the chill of the air.

"But it could be worse."

Riley laughs a bit, it's strained but he's trying desperately to break the tension.

"So...surprised to see me?"
