Barry is seating away from the crowds. It's been rough, this past week, trying to deal with his departure, with Sara's feelings about it, with a Bar that he feels still needs him (even though it can do fine without him). He's eating macaroni and cheese for lunch, a sure sign he wants - needs - comfort food ( Read more... )

Sara has a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. Comfort food seems to be the order of the day.

"Hey."

"Hi." Barry's grin brightens a bit. "How you doing?" He gives he a hug and kiss as she sits.

[ooc: I may be fleeing early as well, since an unexpected snowstorm's come in. No problem.]

"I'm fine. You?" She sits, giving him a smile.

He exhales, a small puff of air escaping. "I've been better. But all things considered, I don't feel that down.

"Guess once I knew this was coming, it got easier to face."

She squeezes his hand. "I know. In a way, it's been at the back of my mind for months and I've known it would happen." Knowing doesn't make the sadness disappear.

"I spoke to Naraht yesterday--I hadn't known he was back and apparently a war has broken out between the Federation and the Romulans. He seemed glad for a break."

"Dear lord." It makes sense. And even knowing that the crew of the Enterprise lives long enough from Naraht's time to be in those movies - two of which he saw and liked - doesn't change the reality.

"I should look for him, see how he's doing. He seems so unwarlike, but he knew what the risks were in enlisting, I guess."

She snorts. "You didn't see the episode 'Devil in the Dark', did you? Horta can be as vicious as any other being when protecting their own, or in Naraht's case, their shipmates."

Barry thinks. "I saw it long ago. Must have been 15. And I do recall that.

"But I also know that when I think of Naraht, I think of a gentle soul with a bent towards thinking. Or maybe I think of a mermaid." He smirks. "But not a warrior. Guess he keeps that to himself."

"Hmmm. I can see your point. All the same, I doubt I'd want him angry at me for any reason."

"I think you might be right." He smiles, glad that he's never made the Horta mad.

"I assume you heard about Bernard and Tonks' baby?"

"Oh, yes! I sent them a congratulatory card."

"I went a bit further. I bought Anthony a big stuffed bear and the parents a bottle of rye.

"And when I told the Bar who it was for, it actually let me pay." Barry's smile is very nice and warm now. There is no sadness that other people get to be happy. Instead, there is delight that he could see it before he goes.

If Barry could read minds, he would find his thoughts echoed.

Sara's swiftly moved through the stages of grief and is on the brink of arriving at acceptance. And she's glad she isn't wasting time with unnecessary denial.

But Barry can't read minds. Only faces, and what he sees is comforting. Sara will be able to cope, in time, and that alone lets him worry a bit less.

"Have you begun the plans for the bachelorette party?"

"We're going to Chippendale's. I need to ask Catherine when she wants it to take place and coordinate schedules."

Ah, Chippendale's. The less Barry saks, the better.

"I still haven't seen Hank since I found out about the date. I need to talk to him about a few things, in fact, including the bachelor party. Can't have it without him, after all."
