Feeling inspired and more than a little confident since his date with Annabeth, Scorpius is performing some broom surgery in Milliways this evening.

He's got the charred thing on the table in front of him and he's currently snipping off the burnt bristles using the clippers from his broom-repair kit. That's been tucked into the corner of the ( Read more... )

Lily eyes the broom with something between curiosity and amusement.

"Rough match was it, then?"

"Brutal," Scorpius quips, not looking up from his work. He's got to make sure he doesn't snip off too much, after all. "No one was save. Half the stands were in a fiery blaze before a goal had even been scored."

He makes his cut, and then glances up.

"Actually, I wasn't even playing at the time this happened."

Lily laughs.

"Well, of course not. I assume you'd be far too busy fleeing the conflagration to worry about the game," she says, cheerfully.

"How did it happen?"

"Flee a game because of a little fire? Never," he all but scoffs before shaking his head with an amused grin.

"I was, er, attempting to modify the broom to increase its speed threshold."

"Sadly, I think most of the Quidditch players I know would probably agree with you."

She eyes the broom.

"And I take it that it didn't work, your modification attempt?"

"Probably because we've taken one too many Bludgers to the head already."

He shrugs, still grinning, before he gives the broom a glance-over.

"And no, not quite. But, I think I know where I went wrong so I'm hoping I can correct it."

"Or because you're very, very dedicated.

"But probably the Bludgers to the head, yeah.

"So what went wrong?"

"I think I forgot to adjust the hover charm to compensate."

This time his shrug is a sheepish one.

"I might have gotten a bit ahead of myself when I was working on it."

"At least you think you know what you forgot," she says. "And you know, if no one experimented, nothing would ever change.

"Um, you weren't on the broom when it caught fire, were you?"

"No, I, uhm - Shockingly enough, I exercised some caution and kept myself grounded."

He doesn't even want to think about how terribly embarrassing that would've been otherwise!

"I think I'm finally learning from all the cauldrons I've had explode while practicing potions."

" ... you've blown up multiple cauldrons?

"Really?"

alsoagreengrass January 21 2011, 05:19:20 UTC
"I wouldn't, uhm - I wouldn't say multiple cauldrons. Once or twice, maybe."

If he's only counting this year.

"And, honestly, it's more like the potion is exploding out of the cauldron rather than the cauldron itself. Except for that one that melted..."

Lily just manages not to giggle.

"Oh, well, exploding potions are a little more common.

"I've got a jumper that got ruined by one of those. Stuff went everywhere, can't get the spot out."

Not that it had been her potion doing the exploding, of course.

"I'm glad you weren't on the broom when it caught fire."

"Only a jumper? You're fortunate, and should probably never be around me when I've got a cauldron out, if you want to keep it that way. I nearly destroyed the whole of my father's lab when I was thirteen."

Granted, he had been attempting a rather advanced potion for his age and has since learned to exercise even more caution than he already had been when it comes to experimenting.

"And, er, thanks. I'm glad I wasn't on the broom either."

"Well, it wasn't my potion, so I just got spattered," she confesses. "Other people lost more than a jumper. Like eyebrows."

Lily raises her not-lost-in-a-Potions-accident eyebrows.

"A whole lab? What were you trying to do?"

"I was wanting to practice, before the term started, and I think - I remember my grandmother was sick? Or someone was, anyway. So I got the brilliant idea of trying to brew a Pepperup Potion."
