Fic: Afterlife

I got this idea last night. Ryan/Elaine.

Title: Afterlife
Author: Catch22girl
Fandom: Milliways Bar (Ryan/Elaine)
Disclaimer: Characters aren't even close to mine. Lets say Real Time Productions and Malory.
Note: For Shelle and Bridget.

Who thought he'd have to die to live?

Ryan sat by the lake with Elaine. Her green gown covered all but her bare feet. He liked it when she wore more modern clothing because it meant she wasn't distancing herself so much from other people. The layers of fabric were from her time, but also a form of protection.

They don't have to talk. Her hand in his was its own language. Their hearts beat at a steady pace and neither questioned the impossible fact of a beating heart after death.

Other dead were there, but it wasn't heaven.

Ryan glanced at Elaine and saw that she was wearing her hair in a braid. He idly wondered how it would look when she woke up.

She turned to smile at him, her kind (she was kind, one of the kindest most gentle women he'd ever met, but she didn't need anyone to look over her) eyes silently asked him if something was wrong.

No, nothing was wrong, everything felt right in a way that it hadn't in years.

"I just realized the Yankees had their opener a week or so ago."

She squeezed his hand, "I think I know what you want to name one of the teams."

On the surface of the lake, a tentacle slipped out of the water and back under.

"That's Sunshine Dust," he said in case she didn't know.

"Yes," she said and laughed. "I do hope that Sunshine Dust gets along with Mr. Julia when they find him."

Ryan lifted his free hand to Elaine's cheek and she leant into the contact.

"I'm sure they will," he said and lowered his hand, he'd just wanted to touch her for a moment.

She moved a little closer.

It might not be heaven but at that moment it felt damn close.
