Lot's of talking ahead.
Chapter ten
Later that night, they went to an Italian restaurant and ordered some pasta.
“Masa-chan? Wanna know what I’ve been thinking about all day?” Asako asked.
“Sure, tell me.” Osa agreed.
So Asako begann: “I was thinking of how afraid I was that you would have changed too much to recognise you... before we met again, I mean. Not just your behaviour and your attitude... I was thinking about your appearance as well.”
“Which is only natural after that much time... to have changed.”
“I know, I know. And that’s why.” Asako laughed
“To which conclusion did you come?” Osa asked curiously.
“About you changing? That I still like you a great deal and that the things that changed about you don’t interfere with us. Besides, you still look good.” Asako played with her fork without realising.
“Well, thank you.”
Osa grinned, but before she could make compliments herself, Asako added: “You see... I look at myself in the mirror and ponder about how you see me now. With..” She lightly pulled at a strand of her hair and then patted her hips.
“Asako, don’t be silly!” Osa said, harsher than she had expected it to come out. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound so rough, but.. stop talking nonsense, will you?” Osa looked at Asako, her face asking for apology. “Look, I really like your hair this way. It suits you well. And of course you have changed at bit and not only the way you are, but there’s nothing wrong with that! Besides...” Osa winked at her “...you don’t only look beautiful but you feel great, too.”
Asako opened her mouth to say something but Osa raised one hand and continued. “And who, if not me, should know that? Since I do run my hands all over you every day. Wouldn’t you agree?”
Asako turned pink und muttered: “You’re pretty bold today...”
“I know. But you do understand my point now, don’t you?” Osa laughed.
They sat for a few moments in silence, eating their dinner.
“Do you mind?” Osa asked, and laid her cutlery down.
Confused, Asako looked at her “Do I mind? What are you talking about?”
“I... well, me touching you... in the play, during rehearsals... Wouldn’t you prefer to play with Toni as your partner?” Osa explained.
“Surely not! I love to play with you as my partner. And I really don’t mind you touching me...” The moment she had said it, Asako could have slapped herself. ‘Yeah, go on, be stupid.’ her inner voice told her. ‘Can’t you just tell her that you like it and actually pretty much so? Go on, say it! Now or never.’ But when she dared to face Osa again, the other had already turned her head away, looking out of the restaurant’s window.
“Let’s go home then.”
‘Great, just great. Will you ever have the courage to open your mouth and say the right things?!’ “Alright, let’s go.”
“Would it be okay if I stayed tonight? I got the last delivery today and I didn’t find the time to unpack everything and sort it before I had to leave for rehearsal. My apartment isn’t quite accessible right now...” Osa asked when she stopped her car in front of the building Asako lived in.
“Yeah sure. I know you. You’d stay up all night to clean up and not get any sleep at all.” Osa parked the car.
“I guess I really would do that...” They both laughed and got out of the car.
“I bet the concierge would let you into the house by now, without even asking you where you’d like to go.” Asako teased when they entered the house, nodding to greet the watchman.
“I should try that.”
“Do you think the others are gossipping about us, since we arrive here together every other morning?” Asako wanted to know when she stepped out of the car next morning.
“I don’t know. Want me to ask somebody about it?” Osa grinned.
“Eh... I guess not. Unless you’d like to start some interesting rumors if there aren’t any by now.” They walked towards the door, side by side.
Osa stopped. “Would it bother you if they talked about us... that way, I mean?” Her face was anxious.
Asako smiled at her. “No. I wouldn’t be bothered by that. I... well, I’m pretty sure they do, after all.” She shrugged. “Come on now.” Asako had started to walk into the direction of the entrance again.
‘I would prefer that what they think was true...’ Osa thought, and followed her into the theatre.
