Summary: Cassie and Kara always knew they'd be merging their families one day. They just didn't think it would go like this.
"Is it just me, or is this the most awkward moment of your life too?"
"By a mile." Kara groaned as she leaned her chair backwards a little. "I am happy for them, though. It's so weird it's not even funny, but they seem to really be in love?"
"Yeah, they do." Cassie smiled. "My mom never really dated before. It's strange to think things moved so fast."
"Yeah. I mean, my dad just died a little over a year ago. For a while, I couldn't believe that she was moving on so quickly. But I guess you can't time these things?"
"...This whole stepsisters thing is going to make dating so strange."
"On the other hand...the whole roomies thing does have possibilities." Kara grinned wickedly at Cassie. "At least until they wise up."
Cassie giggled as the two girls continued talking through Superman's toast to the engaged couple. It was hard to believe all that had happened since Kara had managed to get Alura off-planet right before Reactron destroyed New Krypton. Kara had helped her mother get settled into a secret identity, especially since other Kryptonians were still viewed with a lot of suspicion, and Alura had been able to quickly rise to a top position at STAR Labs. But it had been that battle with Metallo that really changed everything, putting Kara in the hospital and bringing their mothers to the same hospital waiting room. Things moved quickly from there, from phone conversations about the stresses of raising teenage superheroines, to first dates, to weekly family get-togethers. When Cassie's mother had told her she intended to propose, Cassie wasn't really sure how she felt. And now, an engagement party attended by the elites of the superhero community.
"Superman's done." Kara gently poked Cassie, snapping her out of her thoughts. "I think they're about to talk."
It was Helena who spoke first, standing and turning towards her Fiancee with a loving smile. "It's no secret that I was never what anyone would mistake for a social butterfly. I was always busy with work, and with raising my daughter. Dating was the furthest thing from my mind. But I guess it's true - you never know what you're really looking for until you find it. These last few months of my life have been filled with so much happiness. And I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you, Alura."
As the audience clapped, Alura stood, her face obviously writ with far more emotion than Helena's. She paused, gaining her composure before speaking. "I - I wasn't always the person you fell for. After my husband died, I became hardened. It was easier that way. Kara was there, and things were very difficult for a long time. After I lost my world, it was as if I was wandering around in a fog, in a world that wasn't my own. It wasn't until I met you, that this world started feeling like home. As the third Kryptonian to make her home on this planet, I finally understand. Kal and Kara each found their anchor on this world. They each found that person who makes this planet their home. And you, Helena...you're my anchor."
The crowd applauded as Alura pulled Helena in and the couple shared a passionate kiss. The next few months would undoubtedly be filled with wedding plans and all sorts of chaos, but for right now, everyone's thought were on the happy couple.
"...I've got to admit, I'm rooting for them." Kara smiled. "Your mom's definitely helped mellow her out."
"And it's pretty good to see my mom focusing on something besides work and me for a change." Cassie said, then paused. "Still awkward, though."
"Sooooooooooooo awkward." Kara laughed as she leaned in to give Cassie a kiss. Sure, their lives had taken some very unexpected turns, but at least they were going to go through it all together. She considered Cassie her family, and she knew Cassie felt the same. This was just another weird little turn in the saga that was their lives, and for a change, it was a happy one.
