Summary: Stephanie left Gotham for a lot of reasons. But only one of them followed her to Titans Tower.
Packing was exhausting, even for a girl who spent most of her time running around rooftops and punching guys twice her size. But the day's mission was complete, and all her belongings were tucked away in boxes by her bed, all ready for the next day's move. San Francisco. She still couldn't believe it. She was going from the town of $1 pizza, constant sirens, and masked vigilantes who didn't know their own business to the town of $12 sushi, concerts in the park, and brightly colored superheroes in their giant tower. She was scared as all hell - who packs up and starts a new life at age 17? - but kind of excited. After the last few months, a fresh start did sound pretty appealing. There were a lot of things in Gotham she wanted to get away from - Bruce's manipulations, Tim's judgement, not to mention -
"Hey there, beautiful."
Steph shot up in bed, looking towards the figure lurking in her open window. "Jason? What the hell are you doing here?"
"Well, you didn't return my calls, you didn't show up to stop me when I decapitated those slavers the other day..."
"Don't tell me these things! And you wonder why we broke up!"
Jason looked around the room at the boxes strewn about. "Wow, so you're really leaving, huh? Drake must have gotten under your skin something fierce."
"It's not just Tim. It's...everything. I need to get away from Gotham. And the fact that someone went back on his promise to stop killing when he got out of prison isn't helping!"
"We've all got our quirks. You snore. I dispatch scumbags to their reward." Jason smirked, that same seductive smirk that Steph knew had sent her down this path so many times before. "Forgive and forget?"
Steph rolled out of bed and grabbed a baseball out of one of the boxes. "You've got ten seconds to leave before I show off my softball skills."
"Aw, Stephie..." Jason said as he stepped into the apartment, approaching Steph. "You know we can't stay away from each other."
Jason grabbed Steph around the waist, pulling her close and kissing her. She pulled away, delivering a sharp slap to his face.
"I told you - we're done! I might not be one of the Bat-family, but I can see why they don't want anything to do with you. It's not that you can't change - it's that you don't want to!"
Jason rubbed his cheek. "Okay, beautiful. I can take a hint. I'm not wanted here. I'll let you cool down for a little. We'll talk."
"Good luck, with me in San Francisco." Steph muttered under her breath.
Jason slipped out of the window about two seconds before her mother rushed into the room, wielding a frying pan.
"Where is he? I'll - "
"Relax, mom. He's gone. No one we need to worry about."
Steph's mother breathed a sigh of relief. "Well, I'm just glad we're leaving in the morning, so we won't have to deal with any more of this craziness."
Steph nodded, thinking to herself that perhaps letting Jason know which city they were moving to was not the best idea.
-----
Crimefighting in San Francisco was definitely different than in Gotham, Steph thought. There, you fought off a meth-head robbing a bodega, got chased by the cops, and had to sneak back into your bedroom without any of the neighbors noticing the masked girl on the fire escape. Life was good when you were a Teen Titan. She had a place to stow all your gear, the media actually liked her instead of constantly speculating if she was "Friend or Foe", and of course, she got to come back to Titans Tower after finishing patrol and cuddle up to her gorgeous Amazon girlfriend.
"Cassie?"
"Mmm?" Wonder Girl stirred from her sleep. "What's up, Steph?"
"We still got any of those cookies Conner's mom sent? I'm kind of hungry."
"I'll check. You stay right there being sexy." Cassie leaned over and kissed Steph on the cheek as she got out of bed.
Steph leaned back on the pillows and sighed contentedly. Did it get any better than this?
She was jolted out of her thoughts by the sounds of yelling, followed by someone crying out in pain. This was then followed by a loud crashing sound as glass flew all over the courtyard. Steph jumped out of bed, threw on her costume, grabbed her gear, and raced downstairs. Apparently, a peaceful night was something the universe was not about to let her have.
Steph could hear the sound of Cassie's cursing as she made her way down the stairs. That meant that whoever had been thrown through the window, it wasn't her. At least that.
"I can't even go down to the kitchen without being attacked? What the hell?"
Steph ran over to where Cassie was lying on the floor. She was clutching her right leg, and when Steph looked down, she could see what looked like an arrow of some kind sticking out of her foot.
"Cassie? What the hell happened?"
"I came downstairs, and there was this masked creeper lurking around! I rushed him, and he shot me!"
"I thought you were bulletproof?"
"Not like a Kryptonian. I need to be concentrating to repel attacks, and wandering around the kitchen at 3 AM...I wasn't." Cassie grumbled as she slowly got to her feet, leaning heavily on Steph's shoulder.
Steph looked up at the gaping hole in the Titans Tower window. "I assume that's where he exited?"
"Yeah." Cassie grinned wryly. "I hope I cracked that stupid red helmet of his in half."
"Red...?" Steph's face fell. "Oh, no."
The two girls slowly turned around as a shadow was cast over them from the gaping hole in the window. Steph cringed.
"Hey, beautiful. Long time, no see."
"Jason." Steph said with all the warmness of an iceberg.
"Aww...I remember when you used to say my name in a whole different way. Longer. More high-pitched."
"Wait, seriously?" Cassie leaned over and whispered in Steph's ear. "You and the Red Hood?"
"Long story. Lots of bad decisions on my part." Steph whispered back as she turned towards Jason. "You broke into Titans Tower and shot my girlfriend. If you were trying to win me over, great job."
"Whoa! You've got this all wrong, babe." Jason put his hands in the air. "I just wanted to surprise you. So yeah, the breaking-in part was all me. Then then next thing I know, some crazy Amazon is charging me. I did what came naturally."
"Do you solve all your problems with shooting?" Cassie retorted.
"Sadly, he usually does." Steph sighed.
"I aimed low. I just winged her. Not like the bad old days." Jason took off his helmet, flashing Steph that same million dollar smirk, and she remembered exactly why this cocky, irredeemable jerk had held her heart for so long. "Okay, okay. I can take a hint. This...didn't go as well as I'd hoped. But we're going to have a lot of time to catch up. I'm pretty much persona non grata in Gotham for the next fifty years, so I figured it seemed like a good time for a fresh start. After all, the Bay City air seems to have done good things for you, Stephie. I think this city could use the Red Hood's touch."
And with that, Jason slipped back out the hole in the window. Steph facepalmed. "I know every girl's got at least one crazy ex, but most of them don't follow you across the country."
"Or carry compound crossbows." Cassie grumbled. "Do I need to be worried here? I mean, this is Jason freaking Todd. The guy's more than a little unstable. Do you think he's dangerous?"
Steph sighed. "Thing is, Jason is a little crazy - I broke up with him because he didn't see anything wrong with interrupting a date to go shoot some people - but he never threatened me, or made me think I was in any danger. He was actually kind of - "
"If you say Jason Todd was a sweet guy, you're not touching me for a week!"
"Okay, okay!" Steph laughed. "By the way, you're not feeling sick, or woozy, are you?"
"No, why?"
"He's stopped dipping his arrows in poison. That's progress, I guess."
-----
A half-hour later, the arrow had been removed and Cassie's foot had been bandaged and propped up on a pillow.
"There. That should hold you till you can get it checked out in the morning." Satisfied that her wounded girlfriend had been tended to appropriately, Steph bent down and softly kissed the injured limb. "Feel better?"
"Volunteering at the hospital is paying off." Cassie smiled. "But your kisses are the best medicine."
Cassie pulled Steph down onto the bed next to her. Steph snuggled in tight, sniffing the faint scent of ambrosia that always seemed to be in Cassie's hair.
"I still can't believe you dated the bad boy of Gotham City. This is even more scandalous than when Kara dated Captain Boomerang." Cassie laughed.
"Yeah, I don't exactly want it getting around. My heroic reputation is on thin ice as it is."
"Aw...I think it's kind of exciting." Cassie reached over and played with Steph's hair. "I promise I won't tell anyone...as long as you tell me everything. How did you two meet? What's he like?"
"Don't tell me you have a thing for the bad boys too!" Steph laughed.
"Every girl's got one. Mine was Taylor Cameron. 7th grade. He smoked behind the bleachers. Doesn't exactly compare to Gotham's most wanted, though."
"Okay, here goes. Just don't let him in on this. If I know Jason, he's probably already hoping for a threesome."
"Hm." Cassie eyed Steph suspiciously. "Is shooting a girl usually his idea of foreplay?"
"No, he's actually usually great with his girlfriends. It's what he does when he's not with us that's the problem..."
