Author's Note: Written for the schmoop_bingo prompt Flowers. My card is here. Also written for the AU_bingo prompt "Historical: Medieval Europe". My card is here. Also written for shiny_glor_chan's birthday request (it's not exactly a fairy tale world so much as a setting similar to one, but I want to keep that square open for a much bigger fic that will likely be set in the same world as this one), and because this is the fic that served a million purposes, also written for pornday. PORNDAY!
Summary: When you're a thief on the run from the King's army, it helps to have friends on the ground.

"Come on, boys! You're going to have to do better than that!"

Roy laughed as he motioned for his horse to go faster. He could hear the hoofbeats of the King's guard behind him, gaining quickly. They said you had to be insane to pull a robbery inside the kingdom of King Wayne the Second, but he always just took that as a dare. His daughter Lian's arms held tightly onto his midsection as they raced forward.

"Ready, Lian?"

"Ready!" The little girl nodded as she pulled out a bag that seemed to be squirming. Opening it, she threw the contents towards the oncoming knights, releasing a dozen mice right in their path. The horses spooked, and most of the knights were instantly tossed off their horses. With this break in time before they could pursue him again, Roy leapt down from his horse. Ducking into the bushes, he grabbed a handful of attractive yellow flowers from the patch of wildflowers. These were almost as important as the jewels they had stolen, when it came to where they were heading next.

"Better luck next time, Sir Richard!" Roy shot a smirk towards the fallen leader of the Knights.

"Your time will come, Red Raider! Count on it!" Sir Richard brandished a sword in the direction of Roy as Roy pulled on his horse's reins and sent them riding off towards the marketplace. It would be easy to blend in there.

-----

The Kingdom's marketplace was a bustling center, filled with countless commoners bartering for wares. It used to be a crime-filled pit, but once King Wayne had returned from his sojourns to take control, he and his Knights had struck fear into the element of the population that preyed on the innocent. Time was, even an honorable thief like himself would have feared to tread here.

"Okay, Lian. You know the routine. You've got the money, I want you to get us enough food for our next journey - three day's worth. And if anyone causes you any trouble, what do you do?"

Lian pulled out a small dagger, twirling it in her hands. "Warn them twice, then cut them."

"That's my girl."

"You're going to see the blacksmith girl, aren't you?"

"Yep, got to get some new shoes for Arrow here."

Lian rolled her eyes. "Suuuuuure."

-----

"Apprentice girl! I'm going to get some meat at the pig roast! Watch the shop till I'm back!"

"Yes, sir." Steph sighed as she finished pounding the new horseshoes. Blacksmith Bullock wandered out of the tent, and Steph breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, she was alone. And if the sun was any indication, just in time.

"Surprise." Steph felt a pair of strong arms grab her from behind and put a fresh bouquet of yellow flowers in front of her face. "Your favorite."

"You know, one of these days, someone's going to see you, 'Red Raider'." Steph laughed. "And how exactly do you manage to pick flowers in the middle of a raid?"

"I'm a man of many talents. One of which is timing. And if I'm right, the boss is out for an hour, and my kid is making our purchases for the next raid. Which means we've got all this time to ourselves..."

Roy leaned in and kissed Steph's neck, eliciting a quiet moan.

"Roy...I've been working all morning! I'm covered with sweat and cinders! You can't possibly - "

"You don't want to know what I was hiding in this morning when they sent Sir Drake after me. That kid can smell out an enemy from a mile away. Believe me, I don't care what you have on you...I just care about what I can take off you."

Roy stripped off his shirt, exposing his muscular, scar-lined torso. With a mischevious twinkle in her eye, Steph let her tunic fall to the floor. The bale of hay in the back of the blacksmith's hut wasn't exactly the ideal place to make love, Steph thought to herself as Roy lay her down, kissing her small, pert breasts as he moved on top of her, but her charming rogue came around so rarely that the poking of hay in her back was nowhere near enough to deter her. A moan of pleasure escaped her lips as she wrapped her arms around him.

-----

"Come away with me."

"Roy..." Steph blushed as she snuggled up next to Roy under the sheet. "You know I can't. My mother is counting on me to finish this internship, learn a trade."

"Come with me, and I'll make sure you have riches beyond your wildest dreams. Gold from the richest kings. Jewels from the exotic kingdoms of the north. Everything you could ever want."

"And a life on the run, constantly fearing for my life. Perhaps it's not me who should go, but you who should stay. No one knows who you really are..."

"Lian and I are wanderers, my love. No city walls could contain us. I suppose until we meet again, then?"

"Until we meet again."

Roy slipped on his pants, shirt, and mask, collected the cooled horseshoes on the counter, blew Steph a kiss as he slipped out. Steph poked her head out the tent's opening and watched as he reunited with Lian in the crowd. Steph counted on her fingers till ten. Sure enough, they broke out into a run.

"Thief! Get back here! That girl stole my jewels!"

Steph grinned as she slipped back inside the tent. Some things never changed.

"Happy trails, Red Raider."
