Title: Misadventures in Petsitting
Fandom: DC Universe
Characters/Pairing: Jaime Reyes/Kara Zor-El, Streaky the Super-Cat
Rating: G
Words: 905
Summary: Jaime thought he was a cat person...
Author's Notes: Written for stagesoflove for the theme of "Five Ways to Say I Love You". I don't have a catchy theme for this week, but really, if dealing with a surly supercat for your girlfriend doesn't say love, what does? Wednesday Comics has convinced me that the world needs more Streaky fic.

Jaime ran his hand through Kara's hair as she dug into the box of chocolates he had brought her. It was the least he could do, he thought, considering the day she had apparently just had.

"Okay. Tell me what happened."

"You wouldn't believe it." Kara sighed. "So, I told you Superman asked me to look after Krypto today, right?"

"Yeah, I gathered from the reports of you chasing a flying dog and cat." Jaime laughed.

"Well, apparently there was this weird solar flare thing going on, and it made them both go crazy. So I spent most of the day chasing them around and keeping them from destroying the city - or trying. I finally stopped the guys who were causing the problems, and Krypto went back to normal."

"But not Streaky, I'm guessing."

"Not even close! But then, Streaky's kind of surly on the best of days lately. I suppose once she got started destroying things thanks to the solar flare, she didn't feel like stopping."

Jaime looked at the scratch marks on the ceiling. "I gathered."

"She's wrecking the place, and I'm worried what she'll do if she gets out again. So I decide to depower her for a little bit, just till she calms down and stops destroying things. I go to the fortress and fashion a leash with some of the red-sun material Clark has laying around. She spends about fifteen minutes trying to tear it off before she realizes she can't break the leash without her powers, then calms down a bit, and I figure I'll let her out once we're home."

"Sounds like a good plan..."

"I thought so too. Until the part where she sees a squirrel and goes nuts trying to chase it. She was darting between my legs, I was getting tangled up in the cord, and when I tried to chase after her, I tripped over my own feet, and because I was tangled up in the red-sun leash..."

"I get the picture." Jaime looked at Kara's ankle, set in a fresh pink cast. "How bad is it?"

"I've got a hairline fracture. It'll heal pretty quickly not that my powers are back, but it still sucks." Kara sighed. "I can't believe I managed to hurt myself tripping over a super-leash. This has got to be a new low."

Jaime wrapped his arm around Kara and nuzzled her neck. "I'm sorry your day was so bad. If it's any consolation, I probably embarassed myself a dozen times on my way over here. I'm not exactly what you'd call smooth."

"Hee. I believe you. I just want to crash and snuggle with my boyfriend now. Maybe watch some trashy reality TV before bed. That sound like a plan?"

"Perfect."

All of a sudden, something furry pounced on Jaime's back, digging what felt like talons into his back.

"Yow! What the - " Jaime frantically tried to reach around to his back to swat the creature off.

"Streaky!" Kara yelled. "Bad kitty! Off!"

With what Jaime could swear was an audible sigh, the cat leapt off his back, looked up at him suspiciously, then wandered over to Kara, nudging a food bowl towards her."

"Mrow?"

"Okay, Streaks." Kara sighed. "Just give me a minute, and I'll feed you."

"Hey, no need to get up." Jaime put his hand on Kara's shoulder. "I'm the one with two working legs right now. I'll feed her."

"You may not have them for long if you give her the wrong food..." Kara said tentatively. "She's not exactly stranger-friendly."

"I think I can handle her. I always liked cats. We'll get along, won't we - " Jaime reached out his hand to pet Streaky, and was met with a low-intensity blast of heat vision. "Your cat just lasered me!"

Kara sighed. This wasn't going to go well.

-----

Kara flipped through the TV channels, looking for anything interesting to watch. She hadn't heard the sounds of destruction or violence coming from the kitchen recently, which meant that either Jaime had managed to appease Streaky, or Streaky had made a meal out of her boyfriend. She wasn't sure which of this scenarios was more likely.

Suddenly, Jaime walked out of the kitchen. A well-fed Streaky was draped across his shoulders like a boa, purring happily.

"Okay, all fed. Now how about an episode of 'So you wanna be a Teen Titan'?" Jaime grinned.

"Wait...is she purring?" Kara gaped at Jaime.

"Yeah, it turned out that Kitty Chow catfood has traces of red Kryptonite in it. Apparently the factory is based over a stockpile of it. She could sense it, and it was affecting her temperament. You should switch cat food brands, and she'll be back to normal. I gave her some leftover Chinese food instead, and she's happy as a clam."

"Wait...how did you find all this out? Do you speak to cats or something?"

"Well, not me." Jaime grinned. "Khaji Da. Apparently it once visited a planet where felines were the dominant species, and adapted to their language patterns."

Kara reached over and gave Streaky a belly rub. "So, wow. You just solved the whole thing in five minutes."

"Hey, what are boyfriends for?" Jaime leaned over and kissed Kara on the cheek before turning on the TV. She lay her head in his lap as the program started playing. The day was certainly ending a lot better than it started.
