Kara awoke with a start. She looked around her bedroom in New Krypton's central palace and shivered. It was so large, so empty. Even if it was the most luxurious suite in Kandor, it was anything but cozy. The nightmares had been coming every night lately. They were always the same - watching her father die saving her, again and again. On New Krypton, there weren't many people she could talk to about it. Thara had been missing for a while now, and the two of them weren't on great terms lately anyway. Kal was so busy with his duties in the military, and she didn't want to bother him. And her mother...even if their relationship had improved in recent days, they still weren't anywhere near what she could call close.
Kara lay back down on her bed with a sigh. She'd have to try to get back to sleep somehow.
Suddenly, there was a light tap on her window. Kara flew over and opened it.
"Hey, Kara. Miss me?" Jaime grinned.
"Jaime? What are you doing here? If they find you - "
"They won't. Scarab's got a stealth mode. And the Kryptonians have never encountered Reach tech before, so they won't know all my tricks. And besides, if they catch me? It's only an interstellar army or two. Not like I haven't taken those on before."
"Yes, but you don't have Paco and his stick here." Kara laughed. "That could be the deciding factor."
"I'll risk it." Jaime flew into the open window. "Your last e-mail said you were having trouble sleeping. I didn't want to leave you alone here on New Krypton."
"I can't believe you'd fly to a hostile planet just to check up on me. That's sweet. If a bit crazy."
"Crazy's what I do, K." Jaime leaned in and gave Kara a long, passionate kiss. "I'll be gone by morning. No one's ever going to know I'm here besides you."
"Then...would you mind just lying down with me? I know we haven't done anything yet, but I just need someone to hold me."
Jaime wrapped his arms around Kara as they lay down on her bed. She was asleep within minutes, nestled up against him. Jaime mentally told Khaji Da to wake him five minutes before the Kryptonian sunrise. He wanted every minute he could have with Kara.
