livelongnmarry. Thanks for helping out! This takes place a little bit later in the timeline than the scene that inspired it, based on the fact that Steph and Cass already know each other and Steph knows Tim's secret ID, but it's very YJ in spirit. Hope you enjoy!
Kon growled under his breath as he stared through his x-ray vision at the blonde girl writing in her diary in the window. Stephanie Brown, aka the rookie vigilante Spoiler. So this was why Robin was always busy, why he always seemed to have something secret going on in Gotham when Kon wanted to come out. He felt like such an idiot. No wonder Robin was never picking up on his hints! He already had someone!
For a second, Kon thought about going back to the cave and talking with Robin about this. That would be a perfectly rational and stable solution to this problem. Then he saw Stephanie writing something about just how soft Robin's lips were when they kissed, and rational and stable went out the window. Oh, someone was getting scared tonight. After he was done with her, blondie was going to have enough of the superhero life to last a lifetime. Slipping on his mask and costume, Kon got ready to make his move.
It had been a peaceful night of patrol for Spoiler, only dealing with a few particularly stupid muggers, and Stephanie was looking forward to de-stressing and watching some TV. Finishing up her journal entry, she got up to change out of her Spoiler outfit when she heard a strange sizzling sound behind her. Whirling around, she saw "He's mine, blondie!" burned into the window. The glass was still glowing red and seemed to be melting. Looking outside, she couldn't see anyone standing there - especially not holding a blowtorch.
"Okay, who did this? This isn't funny!"
Stephanie's eyes darted around nervously, and she figured this must be some kind of a prank when she heard the sizzling sound again. Spinning around, hoping to catch the figure in the act, she saw nothing except a freshly burned message of "Back off or I'll make you back off.". Stephanie didn't get angry easily, but having some crazy stalker harassing her in cryptic messages did it. TV would have to wait. Throwing on her mask and hood, Spoiler jumped out the window, scanning the area.
"Okay, freak! You want to play games? Get ready to feel some pain!" Spoiler scanned the area. No one in sight. "Or you could just hide like a little bit - "
Spoiler was knocked off her feet as something hit the ground like a ton of bricks. Picking herself up, she saw her stalker standing there. He was wearing a black cloak and what looked like some kind of halloween monster mask.
"Get the message? Stay away from Robin!"
Spoiler tried to keep from laughing as she stared at her attacker. "Who the hell are you supposed to be? The Phantom of the Rooftops? What makes you think I'm going to listen to you?"
"Oh, I have ways of making you listen!"
The attacker fired two beams of heat vision from the eyeholes of his mask, hitting the ground to the left and right of Spoiler's feet. Spoiler threw a pair of smoke grenades in his face, and hearing him cough, turned to run and leapt off the rooftop. Okay, so this guy was a meta. That changed things. A meta, even a crazy one in a bad costume, was far too dangerous to deal with alone. As she was running down the side street, there was a whoosh of wind, and the figure reappeared. Spoiler felt herself starting to get scared. Jealous loser or not, this guy seemed to be pretty powerful.
"Look, I don't know who you are, but if you hurt me, Tim's going to find you, and - " Spoiler cursed under her breath as she realized what she had just let slip.
The figure hovered overhead. "I don't want to hurt you, I just - Wait, Tim? He told you his name? He never told me his - "
The figure yelled with anger, landed on the ground, and started firing his heat vision at the trash cans in the side yard. He either wasn't really trying to hurt her or he was just a really, really bad shot, Spoiler thought to herself. But either way, she didn't feel like messing around with some crazy Robin groupie. It was time to put him down for the count.
Spoiler slid in to sweep his feet out from under him. She hadn't expected it to be like kicking a brick wall.
"Owww!"
The attacking figure froze in his tracks. "Oh, jeez. Are you okay?"
"You could have warned me that you were invincible, jackass!" Spoiler rubbed her bruised foot, which was throbbing under her boot.
"You're not hurt, are you? Oh, man. If you're hurt, Robin's never going to talk to me again!"
The figure removed his mask, and Spoiler gasped.
"Superboy? What the hell were you doing?"
"....Yeah, looking back, this may not have been the best idea I've ever had. I just wanted to scare you a little, make you dump Robin."
"Dump Robin? Why would you care if Robin and I are dating? I mean, it's not like you- " Spoiler's eyes turned upward towards the rooftops, and Kon could swear he saw her grin under her mask. "Oh, you are so screwed now."
Kon could almost see a figure cloaked in shadows out of the corner of his eye. Suddenly, there was a THUNK sound as something hard and fast hit the back of his head. Kon felt everything go black.
_____________
Oracle clapped as she saw Kon go down.
"That's my girl!"
Black Canary eyed Barbara suspiciously. "How'd you know Cass would be able to take down Superboy?"
"She's Cassandra Cain. I'm surprised it took this long. Besides, given that it was Spoiler being attacked...let's just say she's extra-motivated."
Canary did a double-take. "So wait, you're saying that Spoiler and Batgirl are...how'd you know?"
Oracle calmly took a sip of her coffee. "I'm Oracle. Ooh, let's see if anything funny happens while he's out."
________
Kon groaned as he came to. It felt like a million jackhammers going off in his head. His vision started coming into focus, and looking up from his place on the floor he could see Robin standing over him. Stephanie was sitting on the bed with an ice pack on her foot, and Batgirl was hanging out in the corner glaring at him menacingly. At least he thought so, given the mask.
"You okay, Kon?"
Kon rubbed his head. "Yeah, I think so, Rob."
Kon barely had time to finish his sentence before Tim slapped him upside the head. "Idiot."
"Oww....that was kinda uncalled for! I mean, it was a momentary lapse in bad judgement."
Tim raised his hand. "Straw poll. Who here thinks Kon was an idiot?"
Batgirl and Steph's hands shot up in record time.
"Oh, like those two are an impartial audience."
"No, I think I agree with them."
Everyone's head spun around at the sound of the dark, all-too-familiar voice. Batman had snuck into Steph's bedroom, unseen by anyone.
"Batman! It's okay, the situation's defused now. You didn't need to - "
"I know, Robin. I felt it was worth stopping by anyway to deliver a few...thoughts." Batman turned to glare at the three teenagers.
"Hey, why are you glaring at me? He's the one who came after me!" Steph crossed her arms indignantly.
"Shut up, blondie."
"You shut up, Superjerk!"
"Both of you shut up." Batman glowered. "Stephanie. You engaged a powerful and clearly unstable metahuman without calling for backup. You're lucky you weren't hurt any worse."
Kon rubbed his head sheepishly. "I wasn't actually trying to hurt her. I was just trying to scare her a little. It's not my fault - "
"And you." Batman whirled around and fixed Kon with a glare that made him wish he could disappear into the floor. "You are a walking tank. A living weapon of mass destruction. One moment of carelessness, and you could have killed Stephanie. Did that even cross your mind?"
"Um...not really."
Batman's eyes turned to Batgirl. "Batgirl. You singlehandedly took on a clone of Superman and knocked him unconscious. ...Well done."
Batgirl nodded, clearly pleased with herself, as Batman turned to leave. "I'll be discussing this whole affair with Superman and Red Tornado as soon as I get in touch with them. I trust this won't be happening again."
Batman swung off into the night. Batgirl carefully helped Steph off the bed as Steph kept the weight off her bruised foot. As they slowly walked out of the room, Steph turned back and stuck her tongue out at Kon. Kon almost retaliated, but figured he had dug himself a deep enough hole for the night.
The company gone, Tim sat down on the floor next to Kon. "So...want to tell me what the hell this was all about?"
Kon groaned. "Not really, no. Can't I just curl up into a ball and die from humiliation? I'm an idiot. We've established this. "
"Come on, man. You stalked Stephanie and tried to scare her into breaking up with me. That doesn't just happen."
"It sucks, man. You've got a girlfriend that I didn't know about, she knows your real name and I don't...we're best friends and it's like I don't even really know you."
"Kon...are you jealous of Steph?"
"Well...yeah. Come on, you didn't pick up on the hints?"
"No, Kon. I didn't. You're really bad at flirting. Why didn't you just tell me?"
"Because...you're Robin! I don't even know your real name - except that now I know it's Tim something or other, because your girlfriend let it slip - , and I definitely don't know what your life is like outside of the cave. I guess I wanted to know a little more before I really dove in. And now I know a little too much. You've got a girlfriend, and much as I hate to admit it, she actually seems pretty cool. Plus, you think I'm some kind of crazy stalker now, so that's blown to hell."
"Kon, Steph and I actually decided to break up last week."
Kon blinked, his jaw spontaneously dropping three inches.
"We're still very good friends, but I think both of us knew for a while that this is just high school dating. Actually, she probably realized it first, around the time she met Cass."
"Wait, wait...Spoiler and Batgirl? That's surprising. And really hot."
"Somehow, I thought you'd think so." Tim snickered.
"So...you're not mad at me? I really didn't mean for her to get hurt at all."
"I know you didn't. You're a good guy, Kon, even if you can go a little off the deep end sometimes. Just make me a promise - next time you have something big to tell me, just bite the bullet and do it. We'll save a lot of time, aggravation, and scary lectures by Batman."
"Deal." Kon grinned. "So...if you and Steph aren't dating anymore, do you think we..."
"Drake."
"Wha?"
"My name's Tim Drake, Kon. I figured you should know that."
Kon was struck dumb as Tim slowly leaned in and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. Yeah, he was an idiot, but somehow, things had worked out anyway. He was incredibly lucky to have someone as smart as Tim as his best friend, and now, something more.
