"Tim? What the hell happened?"

Rose felt around as she was waiting for the darkness to lift. She was in a bed. It didn't feel like her own. She didn't know where she was. The last thing she remembered, they had been fighting Brother Blood. He was about to set off an explosive, and she charged at him, swords at the ready. There had been a bright flash of light, and then...nothing.

"There was an explosion, Rose. You're in the hospital."

"Why the hell is it so dark in here? Turn on the lights."

"Listen, Rose...when the bomb went off, you were in close range. Some of the shrapnel hit your eye, and..."

"Oh, shit. How long do I have to keep it covered for? This is going to be a pain in the ass."

There was no answer.

"Tim? What's going on?"

"Rose..."

"Tim...am I blind?"

Rose woke up with a start. She never could get those first few moments of horror out of her mind. As she felt around the side of the bed until she reached her cane, she could hear some very light breathing coming from the other side of the room.

"I know you're there, M'gann."

"I am sorry, Rose. I only wanted to make sure you were alright."

"I think you just like watching me sleep, you little green perv. You're in here almost every night."

Rose could swear she could almost hear M'gann blush. "I know you wake up sometimes. I wanted to make sure you weren't alone when you did. Do you need anything?"

"Oh, I don't know. A working eye? A purpose in life besides being the Titans' fucking charity case? You have any of those things? Didn't think so. What the hell would I need from you?"

Rose waited to hear M'gann's tears, followed by the slamming of the door. But it didn't come. Instead, M'gann simply sat down on the bed next to Rose, gently stroking her hair. "I know you want me to go away, but I can't."

"What are you, my nursemaid now or something?"

"No. I'm your friend. Just like I told you in the hospital, I'm not going anywhere. And neither are the Titans. We'll help you. Cyborg's working on technology, Robin's calling up that friend of Batman's in Hell's Kitchen to help you learn how to fight again, and I...I will do what I can."

Rose angrily pulled herself away from M'gann's touch. "You can't help me."

"I can if you'll let me. Just trust me."

M'gann raised her hand and touched it to Rose's forehead. Rose nearly screamed as M'gann's face came into view. It was the first thing she had seen in over a month."

"What - How did you - "

M'gann smiled. That warm, sweet smile that Rose always used to find so annoying. But right this second, it was the most beautiful sight in the world.

"We're on my psychic plane, Rose. Your mind's eye is undamaged, and while we're here, connected by my mind, you can always escape from the darkness. With me."

M'gann held her arms open as Rose collapsed into them, tears streaming from her eye. She knew it wasn't real. She knew they would have to leave this place soon, and go back to the world of never-ending darkness, where everything she knew had been ripped away from her. But now, just for a moment, she was safe here with a girl she never knew would be one of the most important people in her life, and the darkness seemed to be at bay.
