[Day 1/December 3] Ayreon: Universal Migrator

Dec 03, 2007 15:19

I'm gonna number these so I get the unique joy of seeing just how much I managed to pull off. Now accepting bets!

Universal Migrator is a sequel of sorts. In the mid-90s, frustrated by the usual strictures of metal, a Dutch musician put out a more multi-genre album called The Final Experiment, a rock opera about a blind minstrel in the 6th century who receives visions sent back in time from the year 2084, when a group of scientists trying to warn mankind about--and hopefully prevent--its impending self-destruction.

The two Universal Migrator albums are about what happened after that failed.

Oddly enough, despite being set post-apoc, it's not so much post-apocalyptic itself. The storyline does follow the last human being left alive, a human colonist on Mars, after pretty much all the supplies are gone and the only thing left to do is plug himself into The Dream Sequencer, a device invented to allow people to "experience" time travel by means of hypnosis--only through the course of the two albums it becomes obvious the machine actually does something more complicated than that.

All the songs I'm uploading are from the first album, which was more progressive rock (the second is more traditional metal). I also uploaded a few more than I intended to because I know there are some historical geeks on my flist who will be interested in some of these.

My House on Mars - The colonist's childhood. This song was actually my introduction to Ayreon; after listening to it three times in a row, I went hunting more.

2084 - The war that destroyed humanity; it also makes reference to the events in The Final Experiment.

One Small Step - Uploaded especially for aureliapriscus, who has just a teeny tiny thing about Apollo 11 and related space program stuff.

The Shooting Company of Captain Frans B. Cocq - Wiki explains this one better than I could.

Dragon on the Sea - Queen Elizabeth's "Speech to the Troops at Tilbury". The title refers to Sir Francis Drake.

More Ayreon... soon. Probably.
