Personality: Ed has a Napoleon complex. The reason for this is never explained in canon. In any case, Ed pretty much snaps whenever his stature is mentioned, and at times, even when people use such words as "short" and "small," even if they’re not referring to Ed. Despite having the intelligence to become a State Alchemist at the age of twelve, Ed normally comes off to those who don’t know him as being immature, rude, and cold. However, deep down, Ed is very loyal and selfless to people of importance to him, as can be seen with his relationship with his younger brother Alphonse, Winry, and a few people he has met in the military. In canon, he often risks his life for such people, examples being his sacrifice of his right arm to retrieve Alphonse’s soul to bind to a suit of armor and putting himself between Winry and Scar during a fight.
Edward has a very short temper and not much regard for those of a higher rank than himself. (This includes both military ranks and social ranks.) Much to Al’s dismay, he usually resorts to violence to solve differences between himself and others without much thought. Ed is constantly going around direct orders from superior officers in the series, most notably those from Colonel Roy Mustang. The two do have respect for each other, but this is masked quite well as Mustang tries to annoy Ed at any chance he gets, just as Ed ignores or finds ways around Mustang’s orders whenever he finds a chance to do so. Ed doesn’t have much respect for other people unless they have done something to earn it. He will often call older people "Gramps," or "Granny," and he doesn’t bother with formalities. This often results in Ed being very blunt to the point where it’s insulting to the other party.
Despite seeming insensitive to others, there are certain issues that have a large effect on Ed. Due to his own experience with human transmutation, Edward has formed a sense of loathing about it, and he looks with people who have done such actions with disgust and anger. He is often quiet about his own past, both for his and his brother’s own safety from the government (as human transmutation is highly illegal) and for the fact that many of his past memories are quite painful for him to dwell on. When questioned about his automail arm and leg, he often lies and says that he had lost them during the events of the Ishvalan Civil War which had spread to his home town when he was young. As for explaining Al’s state, the usual excuse is that, "it’s a hobby."
Powers, Skills, and Abilities: Ed is an alchemist. Not only that, but because he opened the Gate, he doesn’t need to draw a transmutation circle to use alchemy. Instead, he can just clap his hands together and touch or point his hands in the direction of the object he’s transmuting. He still has to know the chemical composition of the object he’s transmuting. Of course, this ability will be taken from him when he first arrives, but there it is.
Ed also has training in martial arts. His teacher was pretty strict, and had the philosophy that to train the mind, you had to train the body too. His skills in fighting are very good, but he’s not unbeatable. (Actually, he loses more fights than he wins in the manga.) Against normal people with little to no training, Ed won’t have a hard time taking them down. For people with a lot of training, he’ll have a lot more trouble and with others, he may get his ass handed to him.
Ed’s very intelligent as well. He started studying alchemy at a very young age and he was able to pass the State Alchemist exam at the age of twelve. When it comes to science, Ed is a genius. Don’t take this to mean that he doesn’t make any mistakes though. He makes a lot of stupid decisions throughout the manga and often gets himself in a lot of trouble.
