Did you notice in the Spike episode how Max tells Norman that he has fifty cents riding on him? That basically means Virgil was the one who bet against him. BURN.

You can just imagine the conversation. Max is all, "c'mon, he - he'll make it" and Virgil's like "no, no, I do believe he's going to die. Say goodbye to your Guardian, Mighty One, because he's basically going to be no more effective than a lawn ornament after his father's murderer gets through with him." This is why Virgil never had children.
