Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - Two American soldiers who were killed last month during a patrol were shot by an Iraqi soldier, the U.S. military revealed on Saturday. An Iraqi soldier opened fire on American soldiers during a joint operation between the two armies.
The attack took place Dec. 26 in the Ninewah province during a joint U.S. and Iraqi Army operation. Capt. Rowdy Inman and Sgt. Benjamin Portell, who both served in the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, were killed. Three other American soldiers and an interpreter were also wounded.
The patrol had come under fire while establishing a combat outpost. An Iraqi general said the soldier used the opportunity to shoot the Americans. The soldier responsible for the shooting was captured after fleeing. Two Iraqi soldiers are now being held in connection with the incident. (source)
This just makes me feel so disheartened. I mean, I know accidents happen, but we're training these Iraqi soldiers. And this is what we get for it? More dead American soldiers?
Sigh. This upsets me. Greatly.
And the kicker? When the deaths were announced by the military last month, they said nothing about the circumstances. Nothing about how the people our husbands, wives, fathers, sons, brothers, etc. are risking their lives to train turned on them and killed 2, injured 3. This wasn't an accident. It was intentional. This is so unacceptable.
