Devil May Cry... and Why 5 isn't Coming

I love Devil May Cry. If you've been reading my journal since the beginning, you know that. If you've been reading recently, you would know that I've gotten back into it. I love it, it's the game series that got me into gaming, and I love the characters like no other series. Link? Nah, I'll take me so Vergil, Dante, and Nero.

I want a five. Not DmC (will get to that later in the post), but a true Devil May Cry 5. Will we get it though? Well I'll spend thirty minutes once a week googling for rumors, I know we won't for a long time. But why? Why does the series, with so many fans, not come soon? And why (in my opinion) does DmC exist?

I'm going to start with stating what happened. The story happened.

The Devil May Cry series isn't known for it's strongest plots. DmC probably has a stronger story than the entire series (not stronger, more original though). When Devil May Cry started, it started with Trish showing up at Devil May Cry and luring Dante to Mallet Island where Mundus was gathering strength. This was the first game. In the first game they killed the Prince of Darkness/Underworld (assumebly the King is Lucifer himself). Dante killed his father's main enemy, and one of the most powerful demons in all the underworld. Where do you go from there? Well, you go to two which I can barely remember the story of. To say the least, it failed. Then they did a prequel, because honestly, where can you go from the end of 1? They finally continued with 4. I like 4, I like it's plot. But it focused on Nero. Nero was not Dante, not as strong, not as accomplished. So do you get it? You couldn't create a series from 1.

That's why DmC exists. They didn't know where to go anymore. There was no more story in the original to continue, or not quite clearly to Capcom. But the fans didn't want DmC. They wanted Dante, the white haired badass. That's what we loved, that's the story wanted to play out. But it had played out? Going forward would be very hard.

But it is doable. Will Capcom do it? Nah, not in their financial state, and not based their track record. Devil May Cry will need to exchange hand for this to be doable. Or Capcom going to need a few new faces, but then they also need to green-light the project which they likely won't. Capcom doesn't know what to do with the series. They pretty stuck when it comes to a story, Nero wasn't well-recieved as the sucessor, and Ninja Theory's game wasn't well-recieved by the fans.

This seems convuluted, but that's how my thoughts towards this subject are, and that's how this subject is. From a writer's POV, Devil May Cry is stuck plot wise. As a gamer, it's stuck because of Capcom. As both, it's complicated.

This is depressing.

writing, devil may cry, wow, dante, goddamnit, vergil, dmc
