Sunday Afternoon, Dorms, Just Outside The Servants' Quarters.

Jun 03, 2007 14:59

Using a wide-brimmed, witch-like hat as a temporary fan, Evangeline sat on a spot on the grass outside the servants' quarters that were supposedly to serve as her new residence. She looked disgruntled, displeased, and much to warm for comfort as the floppy brim of her hat failed to keep her very cool. Surrounded by a few steamer trunks bigger ( Read more... )

Walter came out of the Servants Quarters after leaving Vlad's for clean clothes and on his way to meet up with Pippi when he spotted the disgruntled girl and her things.

"Hello?"

Evangeline's hat stopped abruptly and she looked up toward the boy. She shifted a little under her skirt, spread out on the grass like a blanket. "Hello." She spent no trouble hiding the fact that she was looking him over, up and down, rather thoroughly.

Nothing particularly new about that. Walter was accustomed to attracting attention from his extremely shiny shoes to his pushing six and a half feet tall height and the formal waistcoat, tie, and trousers in between.

People got over it.

"Looks as though you're new. Do you have anyone to help you get your things in?"

Hello, welcome to the joys of a butler for a neighbor.

Now that was more like it. Placing her hat firmly back on her head, Evangeline stood up, as straights as she could as if to make up for the significant difference in height, right now to an aristocratic lift of her chin. She smoothed out her skirt a little. "As a matter of fact," she said, her accent vaguely Irish, as though having gone through years of disuse, "I haven't. Are you offering your services? I'm to be in room five."

Itty bitty girl, great big attitude? "I'm in room one, and I'll help you, although I need to be quick about it. I'm supposed to be meeting someone soon."

He looked around for some assistance and spotted Pip. "But I can get him to help." Probably.

Evangeline followed Walter's eyes and nodded. Yes, they shouldn't have trouble with the trunks at all, but her eyes did narrow a little because it was lame that people had to be so freakin' tall around here. She was used to that, though. Satisfied with having recruited herself some nice boys to assist her, she crossed her arms over her chest, ready to watch and, most likely, annoyingly yell directions and corrections at them if they did a piss-poor job of it.

"Be careful with that one," she added, pointing at a trunk. "That has all my tea things in it."

"I shall treat them with proper respect," Walter said sincerely.

"Now, while I wait for the mercenary to decide if he's going to take the job, you could tell me your name. I'm Walter."

"Evangeline," she responded, simply, lifting her chin again. It was a chore to have to bite back the series of possible titles she could include in that, but those were best reserved for a time when their impressiveness would have more dramatic effect.

She would be terribly disappointed by Walter when she got around to the drama.

"A pleasure, Evangeline. What brings you to Milieux?"

You'd think she would have forseen questions like that. A sour expression crossed her face as she desperately tried to think of an answer that didn't involve that wretched 'curse' thing.

Her eyes shifted away slightly. Her weight shifted in her little shiny Mary Janes. After all, she didn't have to answer.

So she didn't. Eye contact definitely reverted (her neck hurt from looking up anyway), she merely shrugged.

"Ah." Well, that was... interesting. He'd probably find out, sooner or later.

He pursed his lips for a moment before nodding to himself. "Pardon me for prying."

"Prying can be dangerous, you know," Evangeline said in a significant, suggestive tone, snapping her eyes back up toward Walter. Which might have been a bit for effective if she wasn't a little girl in a floofy dress, but she sometimes forgot about that detail.

Walter gave her a smile handed down through generations of butlers. A smile that said, My dear, you may be irritable, but I can ensure that your sheets are triple starched every night for the rest of your life. Ma'am.

"Many things can be dangerous, Evangeline."

Although she tried to keep her expression of cool repose, a small narrowing of her eyes at recognition at such a smile slipped through. "Especially," she responded, with a slight flip of her long hair over her shoulders, "things otherwise seemingly harmless."

Walter noted the bare change in her eyes and filed that away in context of self-control, ability to read Butler Smile, and irritability. Object achieved.

Interesting.

"I learned that particular lesson years ago, and it is a valuable one." Not that he'd been delighted that it had involved an older butler's foot on his head and a coffee shop floor.
