Dani was out to get some fresh air. She cringed a little bit as she caught a whiff of cigarette smoke. "You know those things are just nasty, right?" she said.

"I never got the appeal of smoking," said Dani with a slight shudder.

Max took a drag and raised an eyebrow at the other girl. "And I never got the appeal of judging people before you get to know 'em. Guess we both got our issues, huh?" She exhaled, shifting her position against the lamppost, crossing her legs at the ankle, getting comfortable.

Ouch. Dani winced. "Sorry. My brother tells me I have a bad habit of running my mouth off without thinking," she said.

Max shrugged, nodded and took a drag, eyebrow still raised. "Well, if words were bullets..." she trailed off, exhaling.

Max took a last drag, flicked it away, and stuck her hand out. "Max. You too. You new in town?"

"I've been here for a little while, but I just don't get out that much," said Dani. "I spent a few months pouting and waiting to see if my dad would pull me out of this school."

Riiight. Max raised her eyebrow again, and pulled another cigarette out, lighting it. "Gotcha. He didn't, obviously."

"Thank goodness for that!" said Dani. "This place has been pretty good for me. It's helped me put some things in perspective."
