Kylie strolled into town, tired and dingy from spending her Christmas (and all the days after it) in bus stations and hitchhiking. Which should tell you a bit of something, considering that she saw that as the preferable option to where she'd been staying since she'd gotten out of the hospital after fighting the evil slugs from outer space

Bill was out on patrol, and did a double-take when he saw Kylie.

"What in the hell..."

Kylie turned and smiled tiredly. "Well hey, Bill."

"Kylie Strutemeyer, you better have a good reason for bein' here," Bill said.

"What, can't say hi to the girl you 'saved from a deer'?"

Bill was properly chastised.

"Well, fine," he said. "Hi. Now you want to tell me what in the hell you're doing here?"

"Didn't much like the last place I ended up. Figured you'd be easier to find than Starla."

"So you're a proper runaway, then, huh?" Bill said. "Well... guess I can't really blame ya."

"They meant well," Kylie allowed. "But I wasn't so keen on getting locked up in a nut house."

"Talkin' about what happened, huh?" Bill said.

[foreignisclassy]

"Well, it's either 'my family got zombified by slugs from outer space' or 'I don't wanna talk about it'. They don't much like either answer."

"Well, you come to the right place," Bill said. "People here had way weirder shit happen to them."

Weirder than evil slugs from outer space?

"Bill, you gave a teenager a gun and I respect that. But you been hit in the head recently?"

Bill laughed. "Got pretty drunk the other night, but that's it. You just wait."

"Suppose I'll hafta." Kylie looked down at the strap of her bookbag for a moment, then back up. "Don't suppose you found a place around here a body can get a shower, did ya?"

"Well, there's the Y," Bill said. "Plus a pretty decent boardin' school. A motel that seems right friendly, too."
