Being elves, or at least partially elves, neither Vanessa nor either of the boys had to sleep. So when she'd found out they'd be going back soon, they'd curled up together in her room, talking mind to mind among their internal stars. She still felt woefully unprepared to care for children, but the confidence and undeniable healthiness of the boys

Before saying his goodbyes to Embry and Tala, Jake made sure to drop by Vanessa's room.

Wasn't going to let Will go back without seeing him off.

"Daddy!" Will yelled, coming out of his stars and throwing himself at him. "We're leaving soon!"

"Heey, kiddo." Jake put an arm around the little boy's shoulders as he ran at him. "I heard."

"All ready to go back home?"

[elvenchildren]

He stopped dead, looking very serious. "I don't know. I want to go home, but I don't want to leave. Mommy says we'll always be connected in our hearts, but I love all of you."

"You should listen to her," Jacob told him with a nod. "Your mom knows what she's talking about."

"An' other us will be so glad to see you back on the other side."

[elvenchildren]

"Yeah, 'cause they're prob'ly worried sick!" Will said with a look of concern on his tiny face. "Will you guys be worried sick 'bout me when I go?"

"Sure we'll worry a little, but we know just exactly who you're goin' back to," Jake told him with a little smile.

[elvenchildren]

"That's right," Will said, brightening up considerably. "And you'll know we're in good hands. That's what you always say when you leave me with somebody you trust, like Grandpa Billy."

[morethanadog]

"Exactly," Jake agreed, grinning a bit broader. "We're gonna miss you, but I think you'll be just fine."

[elvenchildren]

"Yep," Will said cheerfully. "I'm gonna grow up to be big and strong and the bestest wolf ever, just like you!"

Jacob's smile turned a little wistful. "You bet," he said with a slight nod.

"C'mere." With that, he lifted Will up to give him a proper hug.

[elvenchildren]

Will wriggled happily and wrapped his arms around Jacob. "I love you, Daddy. You be safe and grow up quick so you and Mommy can have me for real."

Vanessa's face went scarlet, but she didn't think it would help to correct the little boy.

Jake just gave a slight laugh. "Appreciate the thought," he said giving the boy a careful squeeze before he put him down again.

"M'gonna go back to the stars now with Mommy and Christopher," Will said happily. "Tell Embry I said, bye, okay?"

[morethanadog]

"Alright." Jake grinned and ruffled his hair. "I'll do that."

"You get back to your mom."

[elvenchildren]

"Okay," Will said cheerfully, and gave Jacob a hug and smacking kiss before scurrying back over to the bed to join the others in their stars.

Vanessa smiled over at Jacob. "Thank you for coming by."
