Jim had to do something to earn his keep. He'd heard about the party but passed it by - he didn't know Piper well enough and he was pretty sure Dean wouldn't want to share his cake with him.

It had been a long time since he was on the beat.

It would almost be nice, if not for the rain. Did it ever not rain here?

Lana left the party and headed for the bench by the pond at the park. Yes, it was raining, but she'd somehow managed to break her rule about drinking and she just wanted to sit and sober up a little before she attempted to head home.

"Lana?" Asking was a courtesy. Of course he knew it was her.

[dark_innocence]

Lana waved a hand in his direction. "Yeah, it's me." She should have known he'd be around.

"Hey." He settled on the bench next to her. "You alright?"

She shrugged. "Little too much to drink, so I'm trying to sober up a little more before I walk home."

[sensitivejim]

"Ah. The party?" He'd make sure she got home alright - and he'd do better this time.

"Yeah." She shook her head. "And I'm mad at myself. Broke my own rule. I haven't had more than one drink a night since..." She suddenly realized who she was talking to and blushed. "Um... sorry."

Jim held up a hand, tilted his head. "I think we've established that was my fault."

"No," Lana said quietly. "We established that if I hadn't been drinking I would have been able to break you out of the zone-out."

Jim rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Alright. I'm not going to argue about it."

She opened her mouth to say something, then closed it again, shaking her head.

He noticed and looked toward her, leaning forward. "Lana? What is it?"

"I trusted you," she said quietly. "I never thought I would have had to be careful like that around you."

[sensitivejim]

Jim was quiet, pressing his hands together with his head bent. She should have been able to trust him.

"That hurt so much," she said quietly. "I've been hurt and so angry and trying not to be. Trying to tell myself that I should have just been more careful and known better, but I... I guess the part of me that still loves you just thought I could trust you not to let me do anything stupid."

Jim looked up sharply at her, swallowing hard. "I'm sorry I let you down."
