The Park - Friday Afternoon

Jan 04, 2008 13:53

Veronica had wanted to unpack and get the house clean before she had to start work and it was impossible to get that done with Lilly in the house. Lilly had wanted to "help" her mommy unpack but was more trouble than it was worth. So Veronica told Dick to make himself useful and take their daughter to the park. Not that he had a problem with taking ( Read more... )

Sam was on his way out to buy milk and bread and a few of those necessary food basics when he heard a little girl's voice from the park.

He paused, some fifty feet away, and just watched for a little while. He didn't think he'd ever get over the fact that Casablancas was a father, much less the father of Veronica's kid, but from this distance, at least, Lilly couldn't stomp on his food and they were really kind of adorable together.

Not that Sam would ever use that word out loud to describe the scene.

And because she was Veronica's kid, she noticed him lurking.

"DADDY! THERE'S THE MEAN MAN!" she shouted, pointing in Sam's direction.

Dick burst out laughing when he saw who Lilly was pointing at. "He's not mean, Lilly. He just drives your mom crazy."

"He is SO mean! He said he is Uncle Cole's boyfriend!"

Lilly so wasn't letting that one go.

"Why was he talking to you about his love life?" Dick asked.

And again, from a safe, out of stomping range distance it was funny.

"Hey, Casablancas," Sam called out, for the moment unaware of what Dick had asked Lilly. "Long frakking time no see, man."

"No kidding, dude," Dick called back. "I got a question for you; why are you telling my daughter about your love life?"

Sam at least had the grace to look abashed as he jogged closer. "Yeah, sorry about that," he said. "But she did want to know how I knew him."

Which may or may not be true as his player can't remember at the moment.

"AND YOU'RE A MEAN OLE LIAR!"

Lilly had her arms crossed over her chest. "Daddy, tell him that Uncle Cole doesn't have a boyfriend."

"Lilly, be nice. You know about alternate universes," Dick said. "This Uncle Cole can date whoever he wants. "

"I swear I didn't TMI at her," Sam told him, and reached out a hand. "This is still weird, but welcome to the neighborhood, Casablancas. Be nice to have a few more guys around."

By which he meant guys who might be likely to take his side, because with both Veronica and Piper living on the Hill, it was getting a little too snarky for comfort.

"But Aunt Phoebe is here!" Lilly argued.

"It's complicated, Lilly. But trust me, it's fine." He really didn't want to be the one to explain the concept of having multiple boyfriends or girlfriends to Lilly. He'd let Veronica handle that one.

Dick shook Sam's hand. "Glad to see some familiar faces around here, dude. And, uh, Lilly will get used to you. I think. She's her mother's daughter."

"Yeah, I kinda saw the Mars in her when she stomped on my foot yesterday," Sam said with a wry smile. And oh man, was Veronica ever going to kill him for introducing a little girl to that concept when she found out.

He was trying not to think about that.

"The more the merrier," he told Dick. Not like that. "How many years has it been for you guys?"

Lilly looked extremely pleased with having kicked the bad man yesterday.

Dick gave Lilly a look. "Quit your smiling. You shouldn't kick people unless they deserve it. And despite what your mom says, he doesn't deserve it."

"We've been together for...almost six years now," he said. "We got together a little after Lilly was born."
