Somewhere on Abby Road, Tuesday Afternoon

Dec 11, 2007 15:28

Piper watched as the sign was being attached to her restaurant. This was it. The last thing that needed to be added. She stared at the sign, imagining it all lit up at night. The Coven. She liked what that name represented. It made the most sense to her.

She worked hard for this and, finally, the restaurant was a reality. It was hers.

Class had gotten Mack more than slightly flustered today, so he was ambling around town, trying to calm himself down somewhat.

He didn't notice where he was walking, unfortunately, because of certain foil packets that were now in his pocket and crinkling as he walked, each crinkle bringing with it a fresh wave of flaily embarrassment.

If he didn't watch where he was going, he might bump right into Piper.

Piper wasn't paying attention either. She was busy staring at the sign. So if someone was about to bump into her, she wouldn't have noticed.

In that case, she would find herself bumped into pretty solidly, as a loud and ill-timed crinkle of foil made Mack close his eyes and cringe as he flailed riiiiiiiiiiiiight into her.

Piper wasn't prepared for someone to run right into her, so she suddenly found herself on the ground. She glanced up to see Mack standing nearby. "Don't you watch where you're going?"

"Sorry," Mack blurted out. In his flustered embarrassment (though at least it was a different kind of embarrassment now), he reached out to help her up and ended up lifting her clean off the ground with one hand and setting her back on her feet, almost as if he'd knocked over a table lamp. "Are you okay?"

"Thanks," Piper said after he helped her up, amused that he had done that so effortlessly. "I'm fine. No damage."

"I'm really, really sorry," Mack told her. "I was distracted. You're sure you're okay?"

"Yep, not a scratch on me," Piper said. "I was kind of distracted, too."

"I'm gonna guess it wasn't by the same thing I was." Mack tugged his uniform jacket straight, a nervous gesture. Then, guessing it was only polite to introduce himself to the stranger he'd knocked over (after all, she didn't look like the type to try and kill him for that), he held a hand out. "I'm Mack, by the way."

"Not unless you were distracted by that shiny sign over there," Piper said, beaming happily. She took his hand. "I'm Piper. Nice to meet you, Mack."

Mack shook her hand and glanced up toward the sign. "The Coven, huh?" he asked with a touch of trepidation. "Interesting name for a business."

"It represents my heritage," Piper explained. "That's my new restaurant. It opens to the public on Saturday."

"Witchcraft is in your heritage?" You didn't listen to Rose's erudite babbling without picking a few things up, after all, and Mack's memory was . . . rather retentive. He was slightly surprised, but she seemed nice enough and he didn't think an evil witch would go around advertising herself as such. "And you cook? Wow. Multitalented."

Mack was a dork sometimes.

Piper nodded. "Yeah, the cooking talent comes in handy when I'm making potions."

"I bet," Mack laughed. "But the restaurant . . . that's just food food, right?"

Piper smiled. "Yes, just food. I assure you."
