Servants Quarters Porch, Sunday afternoon

Walter hated Louisiana weather. Let's just get that straight right now.

Hated it. Too hot. Too humid. Too bloody much rain too much of the time.

His response?

Lemonade.

Lemonade and the exchange of services with a certain witch that happened off camera because the mun doesn't like playing with herself meant that he had in his possession a ( Read more... )

Logan wasn't a big fan of Louisiana weather, either, but he also hated being stuck inside so he was out and exploring the village. "Hey," he said, spotting Walter. "How's it going?"

"Brilliantly," Walter said expansively, waving his lemonade glass at Logan in greeting. "How can one not love a town where the mosquitoes constitute a full voting block?"

"So that's who voted for humidity," Logan said. He nodded at the lemonade. "You sharing?"

Walter pulled a plastic cup off the waiting stack and scooped it into the ice cooler before setting it on the porch railing and setting the jug of lemonade next to it. "Of course."

And what the hell, he'd actually found Logan to be tolerable. Who knew? "I have a little something to add to it, if you're interested."

"Always," Logan grinned.

"Right." Walter pulled out a small ceramic flask and added a tiny amount of its contents to the cup before filling it with lemonade and holding it out to Logan. "Mind this stuff. Nanny calls it scumble."

"Nanny?" Logan asked. He snagged this stuff from one of the dorm parents? Nice. He took a big sip of lemonade and his eyebrows shot up. "That's good stuff."

Walter nodded and raised his glass in a toast. He hadn't so much snagged it (thus his lack of spidery companions?) as traded a number of mind-numbingly dull favors and chores both completed and yet to be specified.

"I tried drinking it like regular liquor after she gave it to me," he confessed. "I took a shot and woke up a few hours later with Pup licking my face."

"I'm impressed," Logan said, leaning against the porch railing. "I've had a lot of good stuff, but this is unique." He swirled the ice in his cup and took another drink. "Hey, Pup," he said, addressing the dog at Walter's feet.

Pup raised his head and thumped his tail on the porch, almost grinning up at Logan. The heat didn't affect him, hellhound and all, but Walter liked the built-in refrigeration of the dog's unnaturally low body temperature on his feet.

"I've tried more than my share of liquors, including some things from other worlds and never had anything quite like scumble." Walter petted Pup's back with a bare foot and leaned back in his chair, enjoying his own lemonade. "Nanny's not that bad. Just compliment her a lot and be very polite. Then you can get things like scumble."

"Good to know," Logan grinned. "I think I need to meet this lady."

"She's rather hard to miss. Just look for the woman who looks like she gave away her teeth in return for more wrinkles."

"It's a small town. You can't miss her forever." Walter finished his glass and refilled it, carefully measuring out a wee bit of scumble.

"I heard you threw a party. Just my luck to be out of town when something interesting happens."

"Yeah, Lilly's birthday," Logan said. "It was awesome. Don't worry, there'll be another." He grinned. "I think this town could use more of my parties."

"This town could definitely use more parties," Walter agreed. "If you need organizational help, it's a specialty."
